Brussels Lions welcome members from Hickson By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor The Brussels Lions Club recently welcomed two new members by transfer from Hickson. What makes this a hallmark in the club's 59 year history is the fact that for the first time one of the members is a woman. Tamara Riach. and her husband David, moved to Brussels last year tor career reasons. Tamara is employed at Wescast in Wingham. while her husband works at Danbred North America in Varna. Prior to coming to the village, the pair had been active members of the Hickson Lions Club. A former Lioness. Tamara joined the 16- member Lions Club with five other women in 1994. The amalgamation simply made sense to Riach. “Lions had always been the largest service organization in the world, but its membership had dropped. The women had always been a counterpart of what the men were doing within in the club. And in working towards the common goal it doesn't matter what your gender is.” David was regional chair at the time. and. she said, “fought diligently to have women join Lions." Brussels Lion John Gillis said Riach is the first woman who has to this point expressed interest in joining the local Lions Club. “We'd like to promote the idea and get more women to join.” The attraction to the organization for Riach is essentially community. “If you are part of a community it’s good to be a member of that community and that means giving back. I prefer to do that through service and Lions has always been a great service organization to communities. As a newcomer, Riach notes it’s also a good way to meet people. “Especially when you move and your children are grown. You form friendships and there is a sense of belonging.” The Brussels club, she said, has made her feel very accepted. “I will admit to a certain initial apprehension, being the only woman, but do I feel unwelcome or not as a Lion. I would say absolutely not.” Riach, who served as president of the Hickson Lions, was on the Lionness district board and was also district secretary and bulletin editor, describes herself as a hands-on worker and planner. “I like to be where the work’s involved.” Welcome to the Club Tamara Riach and her husband David, right, have become new members of the Brussels Lions Club. Lions president John Gillis welcomed the couple who transferred their membership from the Hickson Club. Tamara has the distinction of being the first female member of the Brussels group.
