The Citizen, 2005-02-24, Page 9Senior Mustangs seek first win By Jim Brown Citizen staff' The Madill Mustangs’ senior boys basketball team was still looking for its first win of the season, with games against the Listowel Lightning and the St. Anne’s Eagles finally getting played this past Monday. The games were originally scheduled for Jan. 19. The junior and senior Mustangs played games against two of the Stratford teams last week, with both games played at the F. E. Madill Secondary School gymnasium. In the games against the Northwestern Huskies last Wednesday, the junior Mustangs were handed a 53-34 setback while the senior Mustangs were downed 69-37. Isaac Peel had 14 points for the junior Mustangs, with Shane Gibson getting six points. In the senior contest, Jamie Brown and Dave Gurmck had eight points apiece, with Zack Home and Richard Elliott hitting for six points each. In the contests against the Huskies on Thursday, the junior Mustangs were defeated 65-28 while the senior Senior volleyball girls reach playoffs By Jim Brown Citizen staff The Madill Mustangs’ senior girls volleyball team competed in playoffs last Thursday, while the season for the junior girls team concluded last Tuesday. The regular season for both teams came to an end last Tuesday, with matches against the Stratford Northwestern Huskies and the Central Huron Redmen of Clinton. The senior Mustangs took all three games from Northwestern, 25-10, 25-21 and 25-11 before taking all three games against Centra! Huron, 25-20, 25-14 and 25- 15. Coach Pat Donnelly said the team finished the regular season with an 18-12 record, good enough for fourth place. The team also competed in six tournaments, winning a silver in a Clinton tourney and a couple of bronzes. Volleyball The Madill Mustangs’ senior girls volleyball team was 18-12 in league play and finished in fourth place. The Mustangs concluded the regular season last Tuesday (Feb. 15) with matches against Stratford Northwestern and Central Huron of Clinton. (Jim Brown photo) Blyth Novices trailing Seaforth in playoff series The Blyth Novices find themselves trailing two games to one in their best three-of-five playoff series with Seaforth. Alex Peters and Spencer Stevenson did the scoring on Feb. 17 as the Blyth squad scored a 2-0 decision to get back into the series. Mike Van Wyk recorded the shut out in the Blyth net. Peters did all the scoring for Blyth in game two of the series played Feb. 15 in Seaforth, as the visitors were handed a 5-3 setback by the host team. Ryan Nesbitt and Mike Van Wyk earned single assists. Matthew Van Wyk was in goal for Blyth. Trystan Weber was the lone goal­ getter for Brussels in the opening game of the series, played Feb. 13 in Blyth. Mike Van Wyk received an assist and Matthew Van Wyk was in goal for Blyth. Mustangs were handed a 59-24 defeat. Peel was top shooter for the junior Mustangs with 13 points. Chase Chapman had six points and Wyatt Batte had five points. Junior Mustang coach Chris Coulthard said the team has been improving, but St. Michael’s and Northwestern are two of the stronger teams in the league. He indicated that with a 1-8 record in league play, the Madill junior boys won’t be competing in the playoffs. “We showed some hustle today,” Coulthard said following Thursday’s contest. In the senior contest, Elliott scored eight points for Madill and Brown contributed seven points. Junior Mustangs’ coach, Terry Cox, said the team is 0- 9 in league play and are out of the playoffs. He said they did a good job against the Huskies on Thursday. “Compared to last year, we have improved,” said Cox. The quarter- and semi-finals were played yesterday, Wednesday, with the Huron-Perth final being played Friday. The coach said there is a club team called the Huron Tsunami, which is comprised mostly of girls from Madill. “The girls have shown improvement from the beginning of the season,” said Donnelly. “We could be a ‘sleeper’ team at the Huron-Perth.” Coach Audrey Bos said the girls played well in games one and three versus Northwestern and had some serving problems in game two. The junior Mustangs dropped all three games to Northwestern, 16-25, 9-25 and 14-25 before losing all three games to Central Huron, 23-25, 25-27 and 22-25. Coach Kent Klassen said he was disappointed in the way the girls played in their match against Central Huron. He felt they could have played better. The team showed some improvement during the season, but Klassen believed the team played its best volleyball during the middle of the season. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2005. PAGE 9. Tough game Jr. Tykes defeat Wingham The Blyth Tyke 2 hockey team played in Wingham on Saturday, Feb. 19. Wingham opened the scoring with the first goal. Blyth came back to score a goal by Hunter Dale assisted by Dawson Coultes. The second goal was scored by Dale, assisted by Catherine Chalmers. Scoring the third goal was Dale to give him a hattrick. He was assisted by Craig Raynard. The fourth goal for Blyth was scored by Amy Boyce, assisted by Owen Weber. The final goal was scored, unassisted, by Drew Bromley with a nice wrist shot. Playing an excellent game in net was Dustin Treble. The final score was 5-3 for Blyth. Sr, Tykes blanked The Blyth Senior Tykes were handed a 5-0 setback by Seaforth on Feb. 16, in a game played at the Blyth and District Community Centre. Dalton Carey was in goal for Blyth. Atom girls shutout by Ready, look forward to rematch in year-end tourney The Blyth Atom Girls headed to Keady on Saturday. The teams were fairly evenly matched which made it an exciting game to watch. Mikayla Middegaal, Rebecca Chalmers, Lauren Cronin, Caroline McDowell, Alisha Middegaal, Heidi Raynard and Kelsey Kerr all skated hard but couldn’t land the puck in the net. Jeanette Plaetzer and Chloe Middegaal played well on defence while Justine Reid tried cut her slap shot, getting the puck out of Blyth’s end. Courtney Middegaal tried out defence again while Laura Higgins got a taste of playing forward. Jessie Walton made many great saves, but despite the girls’ efforts they Suffered a 4-0 loss.
