Crusaders looking for off-ice help
The Brussels Crusaders are looking tor some help —
off the ice.
It' that help is not forthcoming, the team may not be
around for the 2005-06 season of the WOAA Senior
Hockey League.
Out-going president, Brian Ten Pas said the Crusaders
are holding an emergency meeting on March 8 to
determine the executive for next year.
Ten Pas said he is stepping down after three years as
president and other executive members are also stepping
down. The team is also looking for a new coach and a
new manager for next year.
“Most of the players have indicated they would return
next year,” he said.
The meeting on March 8 gets underway at 7 p.m.,
upstairs at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community
Centre.
“We need to know as soon as possible, the interest
there is in keeping senior hockey in Brussels,” said Ten
Pas. “The community has been great in regards to
sponsorships.”
He indicated the team’s current executive is looking at
all possibilities, even taking a year’s leave of absence
next year.
“We are looking into all aspects of taking a leave of
absence. If we take a leave of absence, we won’t lose our
(league) bond,” he said.
According to Ten Pas, the Crusaders have four major
fundraisers during the off-season, with the executive
helping to organize and manage. The first major fund
raiser is the co-ed slo-pitch tournament in May.
There are also the co-ed golf tournament, the cash
calendars and the NFL football draw to see the Buffalo
Bills.
“These are four major fund-raisers. We need
volunteers,” he said.
Ten Pas stated the players are involved, with Brett and
Clint Fischer serving as the player representatives on the
executive.
“We’ll see what the response is on March 8, before any
final decision is made about next year,” he said. “We
would like to know as soon as possible.”
Besides the four fundraisers, the league holds is
annual/scheduling meeting towards the end of August.
