The days of February continue.
Time passes for each of us in our
way and in our many pursuits. Fof
some the hours are spent in arenas
with hockey, skating, curling and
broomball as the focus. For others a
slip away to somewhere warm is
what helps pass the winter. For
others a while on the ski slopes or
out on the snow machine makes
winter fun.
Many more use the hibernating
time of year to relax and read.
Any way you do it the days of
winter are being well spent. Enjoy
the days.
I hope you had a good Valentine’s
Day with the appropriate amount of
chocolate and flowers to hold you
for a while. I had a very fine day
with lots of family and friends
around to celebrate the February day
of note.
We were reminded last week that
we’ve had our present flag for 40
years. From the newspaper accounts
of the turmoil, the controversy over
the design was pretty tough. Thank
goodness the diplomat Pearson was
in the House as he drew consensus
out of the group. Thank goodness for
his view of our future. We needed
our very own Canadian flag and the
design is very Canadian - smart yet
simple.
We had the grandsons here for a
few days and had a good time just
playing, relaxing and eating. A
lengthy game of Monopoly gave us a
pretty good view of the financial
understanding of these three. I think
we’ll be looked after just fine in our
years to come.
Mark The World Day of Prayer
service on your calendar for next
Friday evening at St. Ambrose.
That’s a pretty remarkable thing, a
yearly service that is the same all
around the world. Join the service at
7:30 p.m.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
FROM BRUSSELS
THINK TWICE-THIN ICE
Be aware of melting and thin ice on
lakes. Remember that ice should be
15cm before it is safe to walk on.
At the Branch WINGHAM & DISTRICT HOSPITAL HIGHLIGHTS
11 darters take aim
By Jo-Ann McDonald
There were II darters taking aim
at the boards on Thursday evening at
the Brussels legion.
The top darter of the evening was
John Harrison playing alone.
Coming in second were Lawrence
Machan and Julie Harrison. The
highs were Jim Brown with 116 and
Sandra Josling with 132.
The Friday night supper of
spareribs was enjoyed by almost 50
hungry diners. This week is roast
beef.
The Friday night wing and pub
night was a great success with a
crowd of 50 devouring over 300
wings. Games were enjoyed by the
live teams and prizes were awarded
to the top three teams. Games
included Name That Tunc, Best
Shots and Putt, Putt, Putt.
Another pub night will be held in
March.
Saturday saw the Branch host a
new event for mixed team darts.
Two teams participated from Branch
218, including Eric Ross, Anita
Little. Bob and Margo Richardson,
John and Julie Harrison, Sandra
Josling and Jim Brown. Team 1
ended up finishing in the top eight
teams. There were 13 teams
participating in the day’s events.
The Branch is still collecting pop
tabs for wheelchairs and we have
walkers, canes and wheelchairs for
loan.
Contrary to the reports on the
streets of Brussels, the Royal
Canadian Legion Branch 218,
Brussels is not closing. The
executive of the Branch and its
members are trying to work out a
plan to make the Legion more
welcoming, more usable and more
viable.
The Legion is open to anyone in
the community to drop into anytime.
You do not have to be a member. We
welcome inquiries to become a
member, but anyone is welcome to
enter the premises.
The only rules to observe are the
removal of hats in the lounge as a
sign of respect, no obscenities or
unruly behaviour. There may or may
not be changes to the Legion but we
are trying to be pro-active in
promoting the Legion and what it
has to offer, what it does in the
community and what it can do in the
future for the community of
Brussels.
We appreciate everyone’s interest
and welcome any suggestions and
new ideas people have to
offer. •
