PAGE 11. ______Agriculture Brussels Livestock report 2,628 head of cattle on offer at sales Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending Feb. 11 were 2,628 head of cattle. 485 lambs and goats. On Tuesday the fed steers and heifers sold on a strong active trade. Choice steers and heifers sold $86 to $91 with sales to $105.75. Second- cut steers and heifers sold $77 to $84. The cows sold at prices $3 to $4 higher. On Thursday the veal sold on a good active trade at lower prices. The lambs also traded actively but with prices $2 to $5 lower. On Friday the calves sold on a strong active trade while the yearlings sold at prices $2 to $3 higher. There were 437 steers on offer. Merkley Farms, Wroxeter, consigned one limousin steer weighing 1.280 lbs. which sold for $105.75. Seventy­ seven steers consigned by Gerald Geisel. Elmira, averaged 1,597 lbs. selling for an average price of $85.19 with his top limousin steer weighing 1.285 lbs. selling for $104. Enoch Martin. Linwood, consigned one gold steer weighing 1,505 lbs. which sold for $99.50. His overall offering of six steers averaged 1.563 lbs. selling for an average price of $96.02. Three limousin steers consigned by Levi F. Martin, Wallenstein, averaged 1,372 lbs. which sold for an average price of $95.95 with sales to $103.75. President of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA), when he was in Vanastra and Exeter recently as part of the annual OFA Leaders’ Tour. During a morning session at the Huron County Federation of Agriculture (HCFA) office in Vanastra. Bonnett met with invited commodity representatives and HCFA representatives. Their overall offer­ ing of twelve steers averaged 1.628 lbs. selling for an average price of $84.22. There were 244 heifers on offer. Jack R. Nonkes, Auburn, consigned two limousin heifers averaging 1,285 lbs. which sold for an average price agriculture. He outlined many issues currently on OFA’s agenda, and pro­ vided details of a number of OFA successes. The Vanastra meeting concluded with an in-depth discussion with comments and questions from the commodity representatives and the HCFA board members. Bonnett’s next stop was Exeter where a packed hall of farmers wanted to know what OFA is doing about the current farm financial cri­ sis. HCFA president Nick Whyte of $93.40 with sales up to $102.75. Thirty-two heifers consigned by Melvin W. Bearinger, Mount Forest, averaged 1,347 lbs. selling for an average price of $89.33 with his top charolais heifer weighing 1,435 lbs. selling for $97.75. John Wiersma, Blyth, consigned one limousin heifer weighing 1,240 lbs. which sold to Dominion Meat Packers for $97. One gold heifer consigned by Glen Bieman, Ayton, weighed 1.280 lbs. which sold for $97. His overall offer­ ing of two heifers averaged 1,238 lbs. selling for an average price of $93.48. Clarence Dekens, Clinton, con­ signed one charolais heifer weighing 1,510 lbs. which sold to Holly Park Meat Packers for $91.50. Twelve heifers consigned by Hugh Love, Atwood, averaged 1,323 lbs. which sold for an average price of $91.34 with his top six limousin heifers aver­ aging 1.293 lbs. selling for $95.75. Six heifers consigned by Jack Lehbrass, Alvinston, averaged 1,258 lbs. which sold for an average price of $89.81 with his top blue heifer weighing 1,190 lbs. selling for $95.25. Lyle Noble, Glencairn, con­ signed two gold heifers averaging 1,255 lbs. sold for an average price of $88.16 with sales up to $91.25. Four limousin heifers consigned by Dale Weppler, Ayton, averaged 1,353 lbs. selling for an average price of $86.18 spoke briefly, then introduced Bonnett to the crowd of 125 farm­ ers. Farmers’ frustration with the Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization program was one of the issues that came up at the meeting. Bonnett said agriculture needs the government to listen to farmers and their organizations, and then act to correct existing problems. “As of now, they (governments) don't seem to understand or care about what is going on in thfe farming communi­ ty,” he said. One holstein bull consigned by Steve Donaldson. Harriston, weighed 1,470 lbs. which sold for $27.50. There were 122 head of veal on offer. Beef sold $100 to $110 with sales to $118.50; good holstein, $85 to $100 with sales to $105; medium holstein, $75 to $85; plain and heavy holstein, $55 to $75.
