The Citizen, 2005-02-17, Page 9Brussels curling club results Winners of the January draw for the Brussels Curling Club were: first, 50 points, Bob Alexander, Janis Bray, Jason Konarski, Devon Josling; second, 42.5 points, Mike Alexander, Jean Bewley, Janet Koehler, Mike Boven; third, 41 points, Merv Bauer, Joe Ryan, Tara Pipe, Sandra Josling; fourth, 40 points, Tom Warwick, Rose Kellington, Gary Pipe, Debbie Campbell. Atom girls down Keady The Blyth Atom Girls hockey team faced a team from Keady on Saturday. The two teams were well matched which made it a very exciting game. The girls were missing a few players, so the lines were a little different than usual. Courtney Middegaal got a taste of both forward and defence and helped the team out a great deal. Kelsey Kerr, Mikayla Middegaal, Lauren Cronin and Rebecca Chalmers skated hard after the puck. Laura Higgins, Justine Reid and Jeanette Plaetzer did a great job of helping out Heidi Raynard, who did a great job of filling in for the regular goalie. It was another exciting game for Alisha Middegaal who scored the first goal of the game followed by one for Caroline McDowell and two for Shelsie Popp giving the girls a 4- 2 victory. It was the team’s second of the season and they look forward to playing this team again in Keady on Saturday, Feb. 19. Local League Atoms host BCH On Thursday, Feb. 10 Blyth Atom Local League hosted BCH in its final game of the regular season. Kennan MacDonald did a great job in net, enjoying a shutout. Blyth made it on the scoreboard in the first period when Steven Ellis put one in the net. The third period saw Heidi Raynard score Blyth’s second goal. The assist went to Caroline McDowell and Ronnie Vercruyssen. The entire team did a tremendous job in the 2-0 victory. Also playing for the Bulldogs were Nick Brandon- Caldwell, Cody K, Jason Meier, Wes Thompson, Nathan Verburg and Laura Higgins. Curling Twenty-four rinks competed in the annual Sweetheart bonspiel held at the Wingham Golf and Curling Club on the weekend. The Shawn Cottrill foursome from Wingham took top honours in the first draw, the Wayne Horton rink of Wingham won the second draw and the Simon Taylor foursome of Goderich took the third draw. The overall winner was the Horton rink, (jim Brown photo) Blyth Skating Club results Many members of the Blyth Skating Club attended the 34th Annual Lyle McPhedran Memorial Invitational in Sarnia from Feb. 4 - 6. With competitors from all over at the event, the Blyth skaters did a great job representing their home club. Results from this competition are as follows: Kathryn Chalmers, fourth; MacKenzie Chalmers, second; Sadie Chalmers, seventh; Kelly Cooke, second; Courtney Middegaal, first; Nicole Middegaal, second; Rebecca Chalmers, sixth; Kyle Middegaal, first; Laura Youngblut, second; Katie McClinchey, seventh and Natasha Hubbard, sixth. • At a recent test day in Brussels on Feb. 12 the following skaters passed: Nicole Middegaal, Swing; Rebecca Chalmers, Fiesta and Laura Youngblut, Harris Tango. With just over a month to go before the skating season comes to an end, all skaters are preparing for the upcoming Talent showcase to be held on Sunday, Feb. 27. CanSkate levels 4 - 7 will also be performing their solos this Friday, Feb. 18 at 5:15 and all are welcome to come out and watch. Brussels Novices play Blyth at John Labatt Centre The Brussels Novices got the chance to play the Blyth Novices this past Friday evening, in London. The game was played at 5:45 p.m. at the John Labatt Centre in London, prior to the London Knights game against the Toronto St. Michael’s Majors. Most of the Brussels team and fans travelled to London by bus. Brody Tenpas scored quickly for Brussels, but after that Blyth took over to win the game. The awesome Austin Johnson played a great game for Brussels. The teams quickly changed to their street clothes and watched as the Knights defeated the Majors. A player from each team was selected to warm up with the Knights. Levi Smith was selected from Brussels and Alex Peters represented Blyth. The Brussels Novice Bulls had an unforgettable evening and tl>e Brussels Novices would like to thank the Blyth Novice Bulldogs for inviting them. Brussels Tykes host Milverton On Friday, Feb. 11 the Brussels Tykes hosted Milverton in an exhibition game. Wyatt Ducharme led the way for Brussels by netting a hattrick. Kai Hiemstra added a pair, Mitch Kellington, Jason Baxter, Rodney Kraemer and Tim Waechter each added singles. Baxters and Kraemer’s goals were the first of the year. Adding assists were Nik Garnet, Logan Clarke, Scott Baan, and Ben Hruska each with a pair. Scott Dolmage added three to the cause. The final score was 9-0 Brussels. The following morning Brussels got off to a slow start against Zurich. Early in the first, Zurich would take the lead. This was short lived however as Hiemstra tied things up from Baan and Ducharme. Before the first was over Hiemstra would net his second from Colton Hastings and Dawson Peachey. Kellington would give the home side a two-goal margin midway through the second. Peachey picked up the lone assist. Before the period was over Zurich would come within one. With time winding down in the third Hiemstra would put the game away with two more goals. Hastings and Waechter would assist on both. Brussels skated away with a 5-2 win. Matt McNichol did an excellent job in the Brussels net. Brussels next sees action this coming Saturday at 10 a.m. in Blyth. Atom rep team wins semi-final The Blyth Atom Rep team played its semi-final against Wallace. They won three out of five games with help from two Novice players, Spencer Stevenson and Alex Peters. The scores were 5-3 and 13-1. The third game the squad lost 3-5 and then suffered a 2-1 loss tieing the series. They won the last game 5-3 to claim the semi-final series. Kennan Macdonald, in net, for the last contest made some great saves. Drew Wood scoring the first, second and third goals assisted by Johnathan Atkinson and Connor Prescott. The fourth goal was scored by Prescott, assisted by Wood. Peters got the final point on an unassisted effort. The Atom Reps will be starting the second round of playoffs against Ayton beginning Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. in Blyth.
