PeeWee Dynamites at provincial
Blyth Junior Broomball sent four buses and many van
and carloads of players, coaches and parents up to the
2005 Junior Provincial Championships Feb. 11. Blyth
should be very proud of the determination and effort
each team put into their games.
The Blyth Dynamite PeeWees were one of the 13
PeeWee teams that participated in the three-day
tournament held in the Stroud and Innisfil arenas.
The first game was played against the Innisfil
Rootbeer team at noon on Friday. In the first period
Derek Logtenberg gave a nice crisp pass to Nadine Otten
for the first goal of the game. The New VR News was
there to film footage and on the 6 p.m. news Otten was
seen ‘hi-fiving’ another player after her goal.
The Dynamites played hard, but Innisfil held them off
until the second period. Otten passed the ball to Jessica
Kuik who shot the ball towards the net and Brent Drost
tapped it in for Blyth’s second and final goal of the
game.
Courtney Bos earned a shutout as Blyth goalkeeper.
The final score was 2-0.
The Dynamite’s second game was played at 7:40 p.m.
on Friday evening, against an eastern team, Valley West.
The Dynamites came out strong in the first period.
Tristen Miltenberg passed the ball to Drost for the first
goal of the game. The second goal was scored by Greg
Roetcisoender with an assist from Laura Dykstra. Kuik
scored the third goal with an assist from Drost and Otten.
Valley West pulled up their socks and did not allow
them to score again during the game. Bos earned another
shutout. The final score was 3-0.
On Saturday, Feb. 12 Blyth’s PeeWees had the day to
themselves and didn’t play until 8:45 p.m. against the
Eastern Storms. Blyth played their best game of the
season against a very strong and aggressive team. Blyth
played with a lot of heart, skill and determination. It was
a very even game with play and scoring opportunities in
both ends.
Wheeler named ECACHL player of the week
Brook Wheeler of Brussels was in goal for two games
this weekend for the Colgate Raiders.
Playing in Hamilton, New York on Friday evening,
Wheeler was in goal for Colgate and Sarah Love of
Bayfield was the netminder for Yale.
Colgate scored a 4-1 decision to move back to the .500
mark in competition since early November.
Wheeier stopped 19 of the 20 shots she faced to
increase her league-leading save percentage to .938 and
her goals-against average to 1.74.
The Raiders were 4-for-8 on the power play. Mallory
Johnston scored the winning goal, with freshman Cassie
Reid scoring the first Colgate marker. Senior Amanda
Barre scored the final goals for Colgate to raise her team

The Storms managed to get one goal past Blyth’s
defence and goalkeeper. Blyth lost the game 1-0.
At 10:05 p.m. they had the opportunity to play another
team from the Central West Region, the Seaforth
PeeWees. Logtenberg scored for the Dynamites during
the first period. He had an assist from N. Otten and
Chantel Collins.
Seaforth scored in the second period.
A 1-1 tie forced the game into sudden-death overtime.
Logtenberg scored with an assist from B. Drost for the
final 2-1 victory for the Dynamites.
Sunday morning at 8 a.m. the Dynamites came up
against the Eastern Titans. Blyth put forth a fantastic
effort and played a very evenly-matched game. Both
teams had several scoring opportunities, however there
was no score at the end of the game. Bos played an
excellent game covering the net, stopping shot after shot.
Unfortunately, in sudden-death overtime the Titans
scored. It was a heart-breaking end to the tournament to
lose in overtime.
Since the Titans won the game they were eligible to
play in the consolation finals.
Coaches Harry Otten, Chas Bos and Mary Ann Drost
said they are very proud of the effort put forth by each
and every player on the team. “Parents and fans were not
disappointed with the heart and determination with
which the Dynamites played during the entire
tournament. The Dynamites had a blast and should be
proud of how far they went as a team in this provincial
tournament.”
Players are: Courtney Bos in goal, defence, Emily
Hogan, Carrie Logtenberg, Sydney Otten, Lucas
Frawley, Chad Gorel, Tristen Miltenberg; forwards,
Morgan Bos, Chantel Collins, Laura Dykstra, Jessica

leading goal total to 17.
The league’s top two goaltenders, Roxanne Gaudiel of
Princeton and Wheeler squared off on Saturday, with the
result being a 2-2 draw.
The win and the tie, along with her strong goaltending
performances, garnered Wheeler the ECACHL
goaltender of the week award.
The game marked the second time this season the
teams had played to a tie and the first time in school
history that the Raiders had tied the same opponent twice
in one season.
Wheeler made 32 saves in the Colgate net and Gaudiel
stopped 27 shots from the Raiders.
Maura Kehoe and Allison Paiano scored for the
Raiders, who are now unbeaten in
three games.

The Blyth Bantam Girls Gamblers team travelled to Barrie to play in the
provincial junior broomball championship tournament last weekend.
The girls faced some tough competition right from the start as they started
oft Friday night against the Windsor Devils. Evenly matched and with no
score in regular time they went into overtime. Finally Katelynn
Roetcisoender scored to put Blyth ahead and they held the lead to take the
victory.
Their second game Friday night was against Eastern #2, an Ottawa team.
This was a little rougher game than the girls were used to but they stood their
ground and, with no score, forced the game into overtime. Eastern scored
early in the overtime to take the win.
Saturday the girls were back to play the Windsor Riot. Another rough game
saw the girls getting into trouble with several penalties throughout the game
but they were able to hold them off through regular time. They started
overtime with a penalty, but again, were able to hold them oft. Then late in
the first overtime, Kellsey Whitfield scored to give Blyth the victory.
On Saturday night, they came up against their old rivals the Mildmay
Carnivors. Always an exciting match up between these two teams, both
realized they had to win to continue into Sunday’s playoffs. It was a very
close game with action at both ends but neither team was able to score. The
girls were obviously tiring by now but weren’t giving up. The second
overtime period was winding down when Mildmay got the break they were
looking for and scored to win the game.
The girls played some great broomball and finished fourth in the
tournament. Amy Root, their goal tender, was chosen as their most valuable
player.
Brussels Midgets fall to Zurich
The Brussels Midgets were handed a 4-0 setback last Wednesday evening
in Zurich to be eliminated from the WOAA semi-final series in four games.
Zurich scored early goals in each period and added a late marker in the
third period to win the game 4-0.
Brussels fell three games to one to Zurich in the series. Brussels now
enters group playoffs.
