Program encourages support of BPS efforts
Research shows that aggressive
behaviour in children predicts risk of
later delinquency, substance abuse,
school dropout, and depression.
Research also indicates that
improving outcomes for children
needs to begin in the early years.
A program entitled Second Step: A
Violence Prevention Curriculum is
currently being used in kindergarten
and Grade l classrooms at the Blyth
Public School. The Second Step
program helps children develop the
social skills they need to control
anger, resolve problems, and
understand the perspectives of
others.
When parents are involved with
school-based violence prevention
efforts, children receive the
necessary reinforcement and
opportunities to practise the skills
they need to create safe
environments and become
successful adults. The Second Step
Family Guide is a four-session,
facilitator-led program designed
specifically for parents of children
who are participating the Second
Step program in their classrooms
and will run on Wednesday
evenings, beginning Feb. 16 from
6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Blyth Public
School.
The Huron County Child Abuse
Prevention Committee. who
sponsors the Second Step Program
in schools across the county, will
facilitate these free sessions as part
of their ongoing work to prevent
child abuse and strengthen families.
The Huron County Child Abuse
Prevention Committee is the home
of Rural Response for Healthy
children. Families Ties, and THE
Bus.
To register for this program or to
find out more about the work of the
Huron County Child Abuse
Prevention Committee, please call
482-8777 or I-800-479-07 16.
Challenge: Finding the time to be active
for sixty minutes per day
Solution: Spread physical activity throughout your daily routine to work up to 60
minutes As you progress to more intense exercise you can cut back to 30 minutes
4 times per week Get started by
• Walking for 10 minutes several times a day - walk instead of taking the car to
the store, or mailbox, slip out for a walk at lunchtime, or join a friend for a morning
or evening walk
• Walking briskly, jogging, cycling, swimming, skipping or dancing for 20
minutes or more
• Substituting an activity break for a coffee break - bend, stretch, and flex to
keep your muscles relaxed and joints mobile for 10 minutes at a time You can do
this at home, at work or out in the great outdoors.
• Trying 10 minutes of muscle strengthening or weight resistance activities such
as situps, push-ups or weights while you watch TV or before going to bed
• Taking a break and play actively with your kids for 10 minutes or more
• Finding more ways to keep active by checking out the “healthy body quiz" at
