In fact, the gap between men and women has now closed. More women than men now die from heart disease and stroke annually. In 2001,37,751 women died from heart disease and stroke, compared with 37,073 men. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Annual Report Card on Canadians’ Health, the increasing number of overweight and obese Canadians now poses one of the greatest threats ever to public health. Being obese can shorten a person’s life by more than 10 years. Obesity and smoking is a double-barreled threat that can cost even more years of life. Almost two-thirds of Canadian adults age 20-64 are overweight and /or smoke. Heart and Stroke Foundation research shows that the number of Canadian deaths attributable to overweight and obesity has almost doubled over the past 15 years. Mini-Strokes — More Dangerous Than You Think Heart and Stroke Foundation research shows that at least 21,000 “mini-strokes” (transient ischemic attacks orTIAs) occur each year. Because symptoms go away within a few minutes or hours, people often assume that TIAs don’t require treatment. A TIA is a serious warning sign of an increased risk of stroke. Between 10% to 20% of people who experience a TIA will have a stroke within three months. The Heart and Stroke Foundation emphasizes that stroke is a medical emergency. Even if the warning signs diminish or go away, it is critical to seek immediate medical attention. Stroke Warning Signs Weakness: Sudden weakness, numbness or tingling in the face, arm or ieg. Trouble Speaking: Sudden temporary loss of speech or trouble understanding speech. Vision Problems: Sudden loss of vision, particularly in one eye,or double vision. Headache: Sudden severe and unusual headache. Dizziness: Sudden loss of balance, especially with any of the above signs. Tobacco — The Truth Hurts The Facts: Children and Youth: Mortality: Tobacco and Heart Health Second-hand Smoke: • Approximately 5.1 million Canadians, or roughly 20% ol the population age 15 years and older, are current smokers. • The rate of smoking among youth ages 15-19 years has dropped below 20% for the first time to 18%. • Between 1994 and 2002, the smoking rate of Canadian youth in grades 5 through 9 dropped from 40% to 23%. • Tobacco use now kills 16,000 Ontarians every year, 1 in 6 of all deaths in the province. • Tobacco use will kill, 45,000 Canadians this year. Of those, at least 700 non-smokers will die of coronary heart disease from exposure to second-hand smoke. • Within 20 minutes of stopping smoking, blood pressure and pulse rate return to normal. • Within 1 year of quitting smoking, risk of heart attack falls to about half of that of a regular smoker. • Within 15 years of quitting, risk of heart attack is the same as someone who has never smoked at all. • 30 minutes of second-hand smoke exposure can significantly increase heart attack risk among those already at risk of heart disease, with potentially lethal effects. 4 GENERATIONS SINCE 1910 Blyth, Ont. Research suggests that only 13% of Canadians with high blood pressure are aware of this, and are getting treatment and have their blood pressure under control. Better prevention, detection and control of high blood pressure is essential. Lifestyle modification can significantly reduce elevated blood pressure — and the risk of heart disease and stroke.
