52 attend
WI potluck
The January meeting of the
Belgrave Women’s Institute began
with 52 members and guests
enjoying a potluck lunch.
The president. Kay Roberts
welcomed everyone and read a New
Year’s prayer.
The program convenor, Audrey
Fenton read two poems about
fishing, then introduced David and
Gloria Hedley who operate a fish
farm on Nature Valley Road. They
began with a small pond fed by
spring water and stocked with trout,
then gradually expanded their
business. They now raise 20,000
fish a year. They sell a lot of fish to
other operators to stock their ponds
and also sell their fish de-boned and
filleted at their own place.
They prefer to run a small
business to cut down on
bookkeeping. Their business is
inspected by five government
agencies especially for food safety.
Members of the public can catch
their own fish, and children show a
great interest in learning about
fishing.
Ross Procter and Bill Coultes
were the lucky winners of a gift
certificate for a filleted trout. After
answering questions from the
audience, the Hedleys were thanked
with a gift.
The business meeting opened
with the Ode, the Mary Stewart
Collect and the roil call. The
minutes of previous meetings and
the financial statement were given
by Doreen Marks.
Mrs. Fenton reported on a
meeting led by John Orr, a health
inspector for Huron County,
regarding tood safety for groups
catering meals for the public.
It was decided to donate to the
Walk for Memories in support of the
Alzheimer’s Society.
The next potluck lunch will be on
Feb. I with a program about books
and authors.
