Council considers hiring drainage superintendent
Would the Municipality of Morris-
Turnberry be better served if it had
its own drainage superintendent?
Councillor Jim Nelemans raised
this concern at the Jan. 18 meeting of
council during a discussion of the
drainage superintendent and
maintenance program for 2004-
2005.
Council approved the billings from
R. J. Burnside and Associates of
Wingham for drainage work done by
superintendent George Guse from
Feb. I to Dec. 31, 2004. The total
was $34,910.69, with the council
applying for a grant of $17,455.34.
Nelemans felt that money would
be better spent if the municipality
directed that money to its own
employee.
He added maybe it's something
council could consider some time
down the road. He indicated another
person could be hired to help out the
public works co-ordinator who
would also become the drainage
superintendent. Another office
person may also have to be
something.
“It is just something .(to be
considered), I think we could be
looking at,” said Nelemans. “I
realize we are applying for a grant to
cover half the superintendent’s
salary.”
He said it wouldn’t be tor this year,
but maybe council could look at the
situation for 2006.
Mayor Dorothy Kelly said there is
a lot of work involved in being a
drainage superintendent, but agreed
it was something the municipality
could think about.
Guse is going to the Drainage
Superintendent’s Conference being
held in London, Jan. 26-27. Morris-
Turnberry agreed to pay his $80
registration fee with the travel costs
being divided among all the
municipalities using the services of
Burnside.
The theme of this year's
conference is Current Water Issues.

Five members of council and
public works co-ordinator Barry
O’Krafka will attend the Ontario
Good Roads Association
(OGRA)/Rural Ontario Municipal
Association (ROMA) being held in
Toronto at the end of February.
Kelly is going b'ut is attending as a
representative of the county. Also
attending will be councillors Edna
McLellan, Lynn Hoy. Neil Warwick
and Nelemans.
Attending a Cohen Highley
seminar on better local government
on Jan. 28 will be deputy-mayor Bi 11
Thompson, Hoy, Nelemans and
Kelly, along with clerk-treasurer
Nancy Michie.
***
Council fully supported a
resolution from the Municipality of
Clarington to amend the Municipal
Elections Act to provide for' a four-
year term of office for municipal
council members. “1 really like this,”
stated Kelly.
Thompson said there would be less
cost to the municipality.
Resolutions from Northumberland
County and the Town of Halton Hills
were filed.
