The Citizen, 2005-01-27, Page 9Brussels Tykes compete in tournament On Saturday, Jan. 22 the Brussels Tykes travelled to Clinton for their first tournament of the year. The Tykes’ first game was against a strong steam from Hespeler. The team put up a good fight, but Hespeler proved too strong and won 6-1. Scoring the lone Brussels goal was Wyatt Ducharme assisted by Mitch Kellington and Kai Heimstra. Matt McNichol did a great job in net. With the loss Brussels moved to the B side of the tournament to face off against BCH. Mid-way through the first period BCH would take an early 1-0 lead. With time winding down in the first, Ducharme would even things up with an unassisted tally. Scoring for Brussels was Heimstra with the lone assist going to Nathan Armstrong. Brussels would keep the pressure on as both Rodney Kramer and Jason Baxter would have breakaways only to be denied by the BCH goalie. Before the period was over. BCH would tie the game at 2. Midway through the third, BCH struck again to take a 3-2 lead. With their goalie pulled, Brussels blitzed the BCH net but could not come up with the equal­ izer. Clugston 1. Pennington Brody Tenpas scored both goals for the Brussels Novices as they played Wingham to a 2-2 draw in a game played Jan. 21 at the Brussels Morris and Grey Community Centre. The first goal came with one second left on the clock in the first period and was unassisted. Blyth Novices score 5-1 decision over Drayton The second came in the second period, with help from Tanner Cardiff and Anthony Vader. Wingham scored late in the second period and added one in the third to tie the game. The Brussels coaching staff said it was the team’s best game of the year. Chipping in with single markers were Dylan Bromley, Trystan Weber and Dalton Richmond. Mike Van Wyk picked up a pair of helpers, with Dustin Pennington earning one assist. Matthew Van Wyk played an amazing game in goal for the Novices. Alex Peters and Ryan Nesbitt had a goal and two assists each as the Blyth Novices scored a 5-1 decision over Drayton in league play at the Drayton arena on Jan. 22. Blyth took a 2-1 lead after the first period and took a 3-1 advantage into the third period. Blyth L. L. PeeWees defeat BCH in game played in Hensail On Jan. 15 the PeeWee team travelled to Hensail for a game against BCH. Blyth took the win 4- 1. A hattrick by Martin Ellis and a single goal by Daniel Elliott gave Blyth the win. Assists were credited to Cody Ducharme, two; Jordan Bakelaar, two; Aaron Popp and Ryan Sjaarda. Contributing as well to the great teamwork were Shawna Popp, Janneke Barten, Andrew Hess, Jeff Plaetzer, Trevor Raynard and Loretta Thompson. Andrew Bailey was solid in goal. PeeWee Local League The Blyth PeeWee Local League team was handed a 7-2 setback on Monday evening in a game played at the Blyth and District Community Centre. Dalton Carey and Ashley Higgins added single goals. Ryan Plunkett earned a pair of assists, with single helpers going to Autumn Wightman and Brendan Hallahan. Bantam Girl player checks the Checking The Brussels BelmoreHeeswater player against the boards during a league game played at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre on Saturday at noon. In last week’s edition of The Citizen a number of lines were omitted from the Brussels Bantam girls report. The missing lines were in the paragraph, Mount Forest scored early in the game and held on to the lead for the rest of the game. In a last chance attempt, Brussels pulled goalie Brianne Wheeler with two minutes left. Mount Forest scored an empty netter to make the final score 2-0. Wheeler was rewarded for her numerous great saves with an MVP medallion. (Jim Brown photo) Ironmen defeat Barons 4-1 Wingham Ironmen leading point getter, Cole Stewart of Blyth, was not in the line-up on Saturday as they scored a 4-1 decision over the Hanover Barons in a Western Junior C Hockey League contest at the Girls travel north to Port Elgin, host Mount Forest on Sunday The Blyth Atom Girls hockey team headed north on Saturday to play Port Elgin. Jessie Walton had many good saves and had a very good game. She had a lot of defensive help from Laura Higgins, Justine Reid, Jeanette Plaetzer and Chloe Middegaal. Rebecca Chalmers and Ashley Higgins had a few shots at the score. Kelsey Kerr, Courtney Middegaal, Mikayla Middegaal and Laurer. Cronin never quit digg ng after 'he puck and trying to get it to the other end. The girls played well, but couldn’t get the win. They have a practice this week and are looking forward to their next game at home on Sunday, Jan. 30 against Mount Forest. North Huron-Wescast Community Complex. The Ironmen scored two in the first period and added single markers in the second and third period. Hanover tallied its lone goal in the third period. Matt Hill had a pair of goals for the Ironmen, with singles coming off the sticks of Joel Riley and Shawn Walker. Travis Fowlie and Ja.nie Chester had two assists each, with Chris Stai ley getting one helper. Shawn Pascoe made 19 saves to record the win in the Wingham net.
