Councillors nominated to LI IN
By Keith Roulston
Citizen publisher
Concerned the province seems to
be rushing ahead with implementing
Local Health Networks. Huron
County councillors decided to
nominate two of their own as
directors to the organization.
“I was shocked and surprised to
see ads (seeking nominations for
directors) in the London Free Press,"
said Goderich councillor Deb
Shewfelt.
He pointed out the network, to
stretch from Tobermory to Lake
Erie, is much bigger than the current
district health council and he'd been
told once the network was
established the health council would
“be toast”.
Penny Nelligan. manager of the
Huron County Health Unit said she
had attended a meeting about the
network and felt it would be a good
idea to have local representation on
the board.
Nancy Kalbfleisch, acting director
of the homes for the aged, said she
had attended a provincial meeting
and there had been no talk about
appointment of the board at this
time.
The discussion was a brain-storming
session and “it took our breaths
away,” she said.
Shewfelt warned the future of
local hospitals would be decided by
the networks which are designed to
allocate provincial resources among
various health providers.
\“Any expenditure at your hospital or
my hospital will have to go through
this,” he warned. “1 really think it’s
important.”
Rob Morley of South Huron and
Bill Dowson of Bluewater will be
nominated as directors.
