Away on a combination holiday and business trip was Brett Lee. He enjoyed a few days skiing in Banff before heading to Vancouver Island and the city of Vancouver to conduct CMRC motocross racing meetings. He enjoyed his week away and com ing home. A memorial serv ice will be held at Pinelake, near Bayfield on Saturday, Jan. 22 at l p.m. Visiting at Howard and Audrey Hackwell’s are Patricia and Sebastian Andrades for a few days. Sebastian keeps Grandpa Howard on his toes with trips to the farm of Elliott Hackwell, haircuts and even the singles dance at the Brussels Legion. He was a great help at the dance and even had his first dance lesson in the kitchen with the help. Happy holidays to them. The police quite often get uncom plimentary remarks about them, but here’s kudos to one observant offi cer. While attending a farm in Warwick Twp. of Lambton County on other business, the officer noticed a piece of brand new machinery that looked out of place. There were no serial numbers. Upon investigating stolen equip ment reports, he found McGavins had had a New Holland baler stolen in June. Following procedures it was concluded the baler was indeed the stolen McGavin baler and charges were laid. Patty Banks and Jim Cook have returned from a wonderful break and vacation at Puerta Plata, Dominican Republic. There was great weather and food and they met new friends and islanders. They took part in many activities and enjoyed riding horses on the beach. They visited the rum factory, amber museum and scenic caves and were on a National Park tour. They noticed a great many dogs and chickens running all over the place, especially the resort rooster that crowed every morning at 4 a.m. On their travels, they learned that rum is made from sugar cane that is first turned into molasses, then into rum. The average waitress makes about $90 a month at a resort. The children love playing marbles in the street and if you offer treats to them, you could be swarmed in a matter of Guest speakers next Sunday at Duffs United Church Greeting worshippers at Duff’s United Church on the second Sun day after the Epiphany were Ian and Brian Wilbee. Joan’s reflection was enti tled, Where is God in the Midst of Suffering? The offering was collected by Brian Wilbee and Neil McGav in. Duff’s annual meeting is Jan. 30 moments. Patty had to make a hasty retreat to the bus and left her treats to be delivered to the school by the tour guide. Patty reports that they just “loved the sunshine” and hopes we see lots of sun here as we count down the weeks until spring. A belated Christmas party was enjoyed by the McGavin Farm Equipment and Supply family and employees. They travelled by bus to London for dinner at the Mandarin Duck, then on to the Yuk Yuks Comedy Club. They enjoyed a great evening together and reports are they were “well behaved”. A customer appreciation day was held at Mike and Shirley Ann Boven’s for Mike’s Carpentry. A social afternoon was enjoyed by customers and friends. Enjoying birthdays this past week were a couple of half century babies. Murray McCall and Heather McDonald Clark. Others celebrating were George Zwep, Don Baan. Jeff McGavin, Gordon Mitchell, Brenda Dalton, Holly Mitchell.. Doris Williamson, Dianne Huether, Brett Stevenson, Tammy Hamilton, Allison Traviss, Valerie Collins, Pauline Gulutzen, Jacob Schmeltzer, Catharine Baan, Joan Ritchie, Marnie Dingham and Clint Emmrich. following the service at 11 a.m. and a potluck lunch.
