Snow volleyball Nineteen teams competed in the annual snow volleyball tournament held Saturday in Bluevale. Top honours in A division went to the Ross Machan team, with the Brian Stevenson team placing second. Top honours in the B division went to the Coral Nicholson team, with the runner- up being the Devon Verbeek squad. The Kim Schmidt team was tops in the C division, with the Janice Shaw team taking the runner-up spot. Jim Brown photo) Elston rink wins zone The Leanne Elston-skipped rink won the Ontario Curling Association’s Zone 14 Bantam Girls playdowns on the weekend and advances to the regional playdowns set for this weekend in Palmerston. At the Zone 14 playdowns, held in Vanastra, the Elston rink from the Wingham Golf and Curling Club won the A side title by defeating Exeter II, Seaforth II, Listowel and Exeter I in the final. Also on the rink are third Karissa Ross, second Brittany Horton and lead Nicole Alexander. Pennington powers Senior Tykes Dustin Pennington scored four goals and added an assist as the Blyth Senior Tykes scored a 6-1 decision over Zurich in a game played Jan. 15 in Zurich. Ashley Higgins tallied the other two goals and collected one assist. Autumn Wightman picked up three helpers. Single assists were earned by Mackenzie Nesbitt, Curtis Raynard, Ryan Plunkett and Dylan Walton. Dalton Carey posted the victory in the Blyth net. I nominate---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- as Citizen of the year for I feel she/he deserves this award because----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Whitfield earns top level Well done Blyth power skater, Collin Whitfield, has recently completed his sixth and final level of CanPowerSkate. He is the first-ever skater in the Blyth Figure and Power Skating Club to successfully complete all six levels in the CanPowerSkate program. Now in his seventh year, Whitfield began power skating in the fall of 1998 at the young age of five. He currently plays for the Huron-Perth Lakers AAA Hockey^, Club and attributes much of his success to his power skating which has helped him refine his skating skills such as forward and backward crossovers, backward skating, tight glide turns, pivots, stops and starts and speed. He is also requested from time to time to demonstrate to his hockey team members certain skating drills because of his strong skating ability. Tykes compete in tournament This past weekend the Brussels Mites played in the fun tournament in Wallace. No scores were kept. Brussels’ first game was played on Tuesday, Jan. 11 against Listowel Red. On Saturday Brussels played Mitchell Red. Sunday at 8 a.m. Brussels played their final game against Listowel White. After the final game all Brussels players were happy as they each received a trophy. Members of the Brussels Mites are Connor Bridge, Tiffany Deitner, Darren Evans, Ceaira Hiemstra Austin Johnston. Logan Kellington, Wyatt Machan, Konrad McArter, Dylan McNeil, Emily Mitchell, Sean Mitchell, Faith Sebastian, Delayna Smith, Jasmine Vader, Christopher Van Veen, Derrick Waechter and Nicholas Zwep. Atoms tie Wingham The Blyth Atom League team hosted Wingham on Monday, Jan. 10. Kennan MacDonald was strong in net, not allowing any goals in the first period. With the game scoreless heading into the second period, Wingham started the scoring early in the period. Blyth quickly rebounded with Nathan Plunkett scoring, assisted by Nathan Verburg. Caroline McDowell kept the momentum going with a goal. She was assisted by Steven Ellis and Cody K. In the third period Wingham posted another goal to even the score. Plunkett then scored his second goal of the game, assisted by McDowell. However, Wingham responded by scoring another goal to tie the game up at a final score of 3-3.
