Gamblers compete in Mildmay tourney

Brussels Tykes tie Blyth
This past Saturday, Jan. 8 the Brussels Tykes opened their second half of
the season with a home game against Blyth.
Early in the first period Brussels would take an early lead on a goal by
Wyatt Ducharme, assisted by Mitch Kellington. Before the first period was
over, Brussels would add a second goal by Kai Hiemstra, assisted by Tim
Waechter.
The second period looked like it would be scoreless but with 11 seconds
left Josh Van Soest would get Blyth to within one. The assist on the goal went
to Dustin Pennington.
Mid-way through the third, Blyth would tie the game at two on a
powerplay off the stick of Pennington with the assist going to Curtis
Raynard.
Less than a minute later Brussels would be back on top by Waechter’s first
goal of the year. Assisting on the go-ahead goal were Ducharme and
Kellington. With under five minutes to play, Blyth would net^he equalizer
from Dylan Walton. Ashley Higgins provided the assist.
For the second time this season, Brussels would tie Blyth 3-3.
Brussels goalie Matt McNichol and Blyth’s goalie Connor Rodger both
played well to preserve the tie.
This past Saturday the Brussels Tykes travelled to Bayfield to lake on
BCH. In a game in which both players and fans wished they brought along
an extra pair of woolies to stay warm, the home side came out with the win.
Brussels started the game off with a bang on an unassisted early goal by
Hiemstra with less than 20 seconds gone. Brussels continued to attack only
to be turned away by the BCH goalie.
Mid-way through the second period BCH would tie it at one.
In the final period, with Brussels looking to regain the lead and applying
lots of pressure, it would be BCH making the most of their few chances to
put the game away, 4-1.
Brussels next action is against Hespeler (Cambridge) in (he Clinton
tournament this coming Saturday at 10 a.m.
Novices score lopsided wins
over Brussels and Zurich
Last weekend was the annual Mildmay junior
broomball tournament which included all the Blyth
broomball teams including the Gamblers Bantam Girls.
They started off with their first game against
Palmerston. The game was much closer than the girls
had anticipated with Palmerston playing much better
than the last time these teams met. Blyth finally broke
through with a goal early in the second half when Larissa
Jenkins, Katelyn Roetcisoender and Brittany Bos teamed
up to score the only goal of the game.
The second game was against Mildmay, always tough
opponents. The girls struggled most of the game never
really getting control. They put in some really good
shifts with a lot of pressure on the Mildmay net but
weren't able to score.
Mildmay scored late in the first half, then sealed their
victory scoring late in the game.
Sunday the girls returned for the finals with their first
game against Palmerston. They played a much-improved

The Wingham Ironmen scored a pair of lopsided
decisions in the Western Junior C Hockey League on the
weekend.
After scoring a 7-2 decision over the Barons in
Hanover on Friday evening, the Ironmen trimmed the
Goderich Sailors 9-4 at the North Huron-Wescast
Community Complex on Saturday.
Cole Stewart of Blyth had a goal and four assists in
Saturday’s victory over the Sailors. Justin Russell fired
three goals to lead the Ironmen offensively.
Defenceman Joel Hemingway of Brussels assisted on
Russell’s third goal of the game, the ninth goal for the
Ironmen. Stewart earned his fourth assist of the game on
game but were having trouble finding the net.
Early in the second half, in a bit of a scramble around
the net, Aislinn Bremner and Hayley Pavao assisted
Katelyn Roetcisoender for Blyth’s first goal. Though
Blyth controlled much of the play, late in the game,
goalie Amy Root made some big saves to keep Blyth’s
one-goal lead.
The girls played the championship game against their
old rivals Mildmay. Both teams played well with each
team getting chances to score. At the end of regular time
there was no score. The game went into sudden death
overtime. Both teams were up to the challenge,
exchanging breakaways and blocking shots.
Finally, late into the second overtime period Mildmay
got a break and a clear shot on net that didn't miss. The
Gamblers had to settle for second place returning home
with a well-earned silver medal from the tournament.
The month will wrap up with a couple of practises to
prepare for the provincials in Lefroy early February.

Also getting goals for the Ironmen were Devin
McGuire, Chris Stanley, Shawn Walker, Jamie Chester
and Zack O’Krafka.
Stewart assisted in the first goal of the game in
Hanover on Friday. Getting the marker was Walker in his
first game back with the Ironmen. Also scoring for the
Ironmen were Joel Riley, Russell, Ted Leeb, O’Krafka,
Luke Williams and Matt Hill.
The Ironmen picked up netminder Shaun Pascoe
before the Jan. 10 deadline. Originally from the
Kitchener area, Pascoe played at the AAA level and also
for Bluevale Collegiate at the high school level.
Mike VanWyk scored three goals and added six assists on Jan. 13 as the
Blyth Novices defeated their counterparts from Brussels 15-0 in a game
played at the Blyth and District Community Centre.
Spencer Stevenson contributed six goals and an assist to the win. Dylan
Bromley added three goals and an assist, with Matt VanWyk getting a goal
and three helpers. Dalton Richmond had a goal and two assists, with Alex
Peters netting a single goal. Ryan Nesbitt collected five assists, with Trystan
Weber getting three helpers. Single assists were earned by Wyatt Carey and
Braydon Whitfield.
Blyth held a 4-0 lead after the first period and took a 7-0 advantage into the
final period.
Dalton Carey recorded the shutout in the Blyth net.
In a game played Jan. 15 in Zurich, the Blyth Novice Bulldogs downed the
host team, 13-4.
Stevenson paced the offence with five goals and a pair of assists. Peters
scored one goal and added five helpers, with Bromley netting the hattrick.
Nesbitt had two goals and one helper with Mike VanWyk and Connor Rodger
each had a goal and two helpers. Wyatt Carey, Whitfield and Weber each
collected one helper.
Dalton Richmond was in net for Blyth.
Blyth held a 4-0 lead after the first period and took an 8 2 advantage into
the third period.
Wadding, announcement
Laura aid Wes Beacom, children of Brian and Bev Walden and
Bob and Angela Beacom were married on September 18, 2004
at the Auburn Missionary Church. They are presently living on
Hullett-McKillop Road. They wish to thank everyone who
helped with the wedding, attended and all those whose
generosity has given their life together a great start.
