THE EDITOR,
In recent weeks. Kathi Newell-

constructing a shelter for numerous

New store, old tradition in Brussels
There is a new store in Brussels
that is returning to its original
format.
A new 5 cent to $1 Store has been
open since December, in the same
store that was originally a dollar
store. The original sign is still above
the store entrance.
The store owner wanted to
establish a business that would
allow them to retain the original use
of the store, when she leased the
building at the corner of Turnberry
and King Streets.
The manager, Catherine
poured and when the weather
permits, will be starting actual
construction.
For a small charitable organization
that relies solely on donations from
the public along with its own
fundraising through garage sales, etc.
this is quite an undertaking but they
Schneider, said the store is unique.
As far as she is aware, this is the last
store of its kind in Canada, a 5 cent
to $1 store. “We sell nothing over
$1,” she sad.
The store sells a wide variety of
merchandise. They carry craft
supplies, scrapbooking, housewares,
hardware, stationery, linens, sewing,
candles, pantyhose and socks, hair
accessories, greeting cards and gift
wrap, toys, party supplies and
helium-filled party balloons.
For customer convenience,
starting on Jan. 31 the new store
are being forced to construct the
shelter by township regulations.
I am writing this letter to be all pet
lovers to consider a donation to this
cause. You will receive a charitable
donation receipt for your donation.

for numerous cats and dogs over the
years.
Our family had the good fortune to
acquire a dog through a rescue
organization and that dog brought so
much love and affection to our home.
I shudder to think what would have
happened to him if someone had not
taken him in until we adopted him.
Someone has to speak for these
animals that cannot speak for
themselves. Often it is an uncaring or
uninformed owner that surrenders, or

Beyond
Limitations
Aging eyes
For a few months now. I have been
“seeing” the need for eyeglasses. My
vision just isn’t as good as it used to
be: I seem to be squinting and
positioning the objects which I am
trying to read forward and backward
from my face, all in a lame attempt
to focus my eyes. My eyesight has
been good all of my life, but for the
past few years, I’ve noticed letters
starting to get more and more blurry.
I have come to the conclusion that
this happens to almost everyone - it
is caused by aging.
Presbyopia, which is a decline in
being able to focus the eye, is the
name of the condition that has
caught up to me. It usually strikes
people in their 40s, and
approximately 94 per cent of those
65 years old require some type of
vision aid. I am several years from
40, but because my muscles are
deteriorating progressively, I assume
the effects of aging -will be
accelerated.
My disorder can cause some vision
■problems, but these are minor.
even abandons, his/her animal.
Please do something constructive to
give them a chance at a new life with
someone who cares. Make your
donation right away.
This shelter has to be finished by
the end of January and funds are
urgently needed. Send your cheque to

Friedreich’s Ataxia causes a
complication called Nystagmus - its
name sounds more serious than it
actually is. Nystagmus causes rapid,
jerky eye movement when I stare at
something. I haven’t experienced
any problems from it, and it does not
cause me to lose focus. I never had
difficulty focusing until I reached 30
plus - it’s a result of the aging thing!
Other problems that could arise in
our vision as a person ages are
cataracts, defined as a clouding of
the lens of the eye; claucoma, known
as an elevated fluid pressure in your
eye which causes optic nerve
damage; and floaters, which are
semi-transparent specs that drift in
and out of view.
I was never worried about aging. I
was quite naive about it, actually.
My disorder does not have a timeline
for the natural aging process - I
would think it will
not be kind to my body; however, I
do try to live a healthy lifestyle.
In that area, I hope to age gracefully.
Every Canadian loves
a challenge, right?
On average, each Canadian produces five tonnes of
greenhouse gases a year. Driving, hearing and cooling our homes,
using appliances... almost anything we do that uses fossil fuels for
energy also creates greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. And these
emissions are causing our climate to change.
Take the One-Tonne Challenge — reduce your energy use and
your GHG emissions by 20%, or one tonne. You’ll save money,
and help to protect our climate and our air quality.
