Cole Stewart of Blyth opened the scoring for the
Wingham Ironmen on Sunday evening, as they built up a
5-2 lead only to hang on for a 6-4 decision over the
cellar-dwelling Mount Forest Patriots in Western Junior
‘C’ Hockey League play at the North Huron-Wescast
Community Complex.
Stewart's goal at 6:12 of period one gave the Ironmen
a l-0 lead and Stewart assisted on Jamie Chester’s blast
at 9:22 to make it 2-0 for Wingham.
However, goals by Nick and Fy Virani, less than two
minutes apart, tied the game for Mount Forest.
Goals by Devin McGuire, Zack O’Krafka and Joel
Riley gave the Ironmen a 5-2 lead over the Patriots.
Virani added two more goals for the Patriots in the
third period to get Mount Forest to within one. Pulling
their netminder in the final seconds, in an attempt to even
the score, enabled Wingham to net the insurance marker
with four seconds left in the game. Stewart assisted on
the goal by Matt Hill.
In a game played in Penetanguishene on Friday, the
Ironmen needed overtime to edge the Cougars 5-4.
Stewart tallied the fourth Ironmen goal of the game.
Brussels Midgets earn single point
The Brussels Midgets earned a single point from a pair
of league games last week.
In a game played at the Brussels-Morris-Grey
Community Centre on Sunday, the Midgets received
strong goaltending from Kyle Gibson, but it was not
enough as they were blanked by visiting Wallace, 3-0.
Gibson made many good saves in the Brussels net.
The Brussels squad had many good scoring
opportunities, but were unable to ‘buy a goal’.
Wallace scored a goal in each period, with the third-
period goal being tallied into the empty net with 21
seconds remaining.
