(Jim Brown photo) Changes needed for library By Andrew Smith Wingham Advance-Times Huron County librarian Beth Ross gave a report to North Huron council last week, detailing the need for improvements in both the Wingham and Blyth branches. The Huron County Library Strategic Plan has set standards that require branches to do some updating. According to Ross, the Blyth branch is only half-accessible, and both Wingham and Blyth are limited in size. “Wingham has outgrown its capacity and Blyth is too small as well,” Ross said. The Wingham branch would need to increase its amount of space from 3,040 sq. ft. to 3,850 sq. ft., in addition to a meeting room. The meeting room is a common area in the library that is used for children’s activities and art shows, and is also used by recreational groups. “It’s a very valuable space,” Ross said. Ross suggested an addition could be built onto the existing library. The building is in good condition, and would work well. “With a little re-jigging, I’m confident it could be done,” she said. However, the size of the Blyth branch would require another location for the library. Ross said there has been success in using a storefront location, despite some concerns over parking. When the library was initially moved to the Blyth building, it was realized that the building was too small for its purpose, but was still an improvement.“It wasn’t ideal but it was much better than what we had at the time,” Ross said. Ross says there is $75,000 of funding available each year from the Trillium, program to improve municipal libraries. Although the money only qualifies for accessibility improvements, Ross says it’s still an option to look into. “We want council to initiate a plan to bring these libraries up to standards, and present that plan to the library board,” Ross said. The library board would like to see a solid strategy by the end of this year. Ross wasn’t sure of which step council should take in proceeding, but she stressed that the situation needed to be taken seriously. “If you don’t invest in our libraries Mid-Winter Sale First grade apples and pears as low as 35* per pound FarmC^^jLyFresh Fresh Natural Cider 4 litres $5.00 and make them viable, people will walk away from them,” Ross said. Reeve Doug Layton suggested that council visit the libraries with Ross to have a better idea of improvements needed. Ross also stated that another library report will be available in March 2005.
