p.m. on Jan. 15.
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, Jan. 9 were Larry and
Myrtle Badley. Guest musician was
Amanda Schwartzentruber.
Barb Hicks welcomed everyone to
church with the Call to Worship. The
first hymn Morning has Broken was
followed by the prayer of approach
repeated in unison.
The children’s hymn was I Love to
Tell the Stories as the children
gathered at the front for their story
time.
Mrs. Hicks told the children of
some of the stories she had heard of
children taking part in the rescue in
South Asia.
One story was that a girl had seen
the wave coming and shouted but no
one paid any attention. She finally
yelled tidal wave and everyone ran.
She was a hero and it is not known
how many lives she might have
saved.
The scripture reading was from
Exodus 4: 10-13 and Matthew 5: 13-
16. The hymn Come Let Us Sing of
the Wonderful Love was followed by
a prayer.
Mrs. Hicks’ message to the adults
was Ministry Versus Mission

Changes needed for library
By Andrew Smith
Wingham Advance-Times
Huron County librarian Beth Ross
gave a report to North Huron council
last week, detailing the need for
improvements in both the Wingham
and Blyth branches.
The Huron County Library
Strategic Plan has set standards that
require branches to do some
updating.
According to Ross, the Blyth
branch is only half-accessible, and
both Wingham and Blyth are limited
in size.
“Wingham has outgrown its
capacity and Blyth is too small as
well,” Ross said.
The Wingham branch would need
to increase its amount of space from
3,040 sq. ft. to 3,850 sq. ft., in
addition to a meeting room. The
meeting room is a common area in
the library that is used for children’s
activities and art shows, and is also
used by recreational groups.
“It’s a very valuable space,” Ross
said.
Ross suggested an addition could
be built onto the existing library.
The building is in good condition,
and would work well. “With a little
re-jigging, I’m confident it could be
done,” she said.
However, the size of the Blyth
branch would require another
location for the library. Ross said
there has been success in using a
storefront location, despite some
concerns over parking. The library

“Merchants were delighted to
have the library next door,” Ross
said. “No one complained about
parking.”
Ross said no library should have
less than 2.500 sq. ft., while the
Blyth branch is currently less than
1,000 sq. ft.
When the library was initially
moved to the Blyth building, it was
realized that the building was too
small for its purpose, but was still an
improvement.“It wasn’t ideal but it
was much better than what we had at
the time,” Ross said.
Ross says there is $75,000 of
funding available each year from the
Trillium, program to improve
municipal libraries. Although the
money only qualifies for
accessibility improvements, Ross
says it’s still an option to look into.
“We want council to initiate a plan
to bring these libraries up to
standards, and present that plan to
the library board,” Ross said.
The library board would like to see
a solid strategy by the end of this
year. Ross wasn’t sure of which step
council should take in proceeding,
but she stressed that the situation
needed to be taken seriously.
“If you don’t invest in our libraries

and make them viable, people will

Reeve Doug Layton suggested
that council visit the libraries with
Ross to have a better idea of
improvements needed.
Ross also stated that another
library report will be available in
March 2005.
