DHI announces herd management seminars Ontario dairy producers have an opportunity to pick up new knowledge and insight for managing their herd as part of CanWest DHI's Herd Management Seminar Series to be held across the province starting in February 2005. The first two seminars in the series have been set and will deliver advanced training for herd managers and their assistants. "Each seminar will cover a single topic in an informal setting to allow for in-depth discussion by all participants,” says Bill Grexton. manager, herd management services for CanWest DHI. The first two seminars - Maximizing Milk Production from Forages and Managing the Transition Cow will be offered in seven different locations across the province. In seminar one. Maximize Milk Production from Forages, livestock nutritionist Dr. Doug Yungblui will look at factors dairy producers must consider to maximize milk per acre, including variety selection, harvesting, storage and feeding management. Milk production depends on quality forage arid a properly balanced ration, yet much of the milk grown in an acre of forage is lost before it gets to the cow. This seminar will be held in Woodstock. Feb. 8; Wingham. Feb. 9; Brighton, Feb. I5; Maxville. Mar. 8; Kemptville, Mar. 9; Guelph. Mar. 22 and Alliston. Mar. 23. In seminar two. Managing the Transition Cow. veterinarian Dr. Ewen Ferguson will begin at the dry off period, discuss important management and nutritional requirements for the transition cow. and examine new ideas on the "ideal” length of the dry cow period. The transition period extends from three weeks before calving to three weeks after calving and represents a critical stage of the cow's life cycle. Positive intervention during this period will have an affect on health, production and fertility during (he next lactation. This seminar will be held in Maxville. Feb. 8; Kemptville. Feb. 9; Woodstock. Mar. I; Wingham, Mar. 2; Guelph, Mar. 8; Alliston. Mar. 9 and Bowmanville, Mar. 22. All seminars run from 10:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. and include lunch. Pre registration is required at least seven days in advance, and participation is limited to 35 at each location. Each seminar is $60/person (+GST). A $5 per seminar discount is available if you register for both seminars or register multiple participants from the same farm. Payment can be made on your Dili herd account or by Visa.
