Winter asthma attacks preventable northhuron.on.ca Winter can be a difficult time for the three million Canadians who suf fer from asthma. Respiratory viruses, such as the common cold and flu, can trigger asthma symptoms and may even evolve into more serious infec tions, such as bronchitis or pneumo nia. Add to that, the typical Canadian cold winter air and the variety of indoor irritants that come with the holiday season and you have the potential for a miserable month. “Winter is already a difficult time for asthmatics because of the increased incidence of colds and 11 u. It’s therefore crucial that all asthmat ics know about possible triggers and the potential dangers that the holiday season can bring,” reports Dr. Greenwald, vice-president of the Asthma Society of Canada. To maintain good asthma control this holiday season, the Asthma Society recommends that you moni tor your symptoms very closely, seek medical advice when asthma symp toms appear, and get an Asthma Action Plan. The following are some winter lips to keep you as healthy as possible, so you can fully participate in the fes tive celebrations. Creating a festive holiday mood: - Christmas trees, ornaments and decorations, along with logs for wood burning stoves, often have significant levels of dust mites, and moulds. - Potpourri and scented candles may also trigger allergy or asthma symptoms; an alternative to consid er is simmering cinnamon sticks and whole cloves in water. - Scented candles also tend to pro duce more black soot than non scented candles. Entertaining: - When cleaning your house in preparation for guests, use mild, non-toxic cleaners. -Avoid air fresheners and furniture polish. Most cleaning can be accomplished with a few non-toxic items from your kitchen pantry such as baking soda or vinegar. Use phosphate-free detergents. - When cooking or baking, use the kitchen fans to remove fumes and moisture Fireplaces and wood burning stoves: - These units are a source of partic ulate matter that is not good for your lungs. - As you cozy up to the fireplace this winter, remember that particles and gases from fires can make breathing difficult, especially for asthmatics. - Dry wood burns hotter and clean er than “green” wood and hard woods are better than coniferous trees (i.e. evergreens). - Do not store wet wood inside. Holiday Travel The holidays are also a time when many people leave their homes to visit with friends and family. Sometimes this can result in expo sure to triggers that cause asthma symptoms. In addition, travel itself can cause problems; for example, the air in planes can be very dry and the pres sure can also cause significant pain if you have sinusitis or an ear infection. - When making hotel reservations, ask if there are allergy-proof rooms available. If you are sensitive to moulds, request a sunny, dry room away from areas near indoor pools or hot tubs. - If you anticipate severe ear or sinus pain while flying, take a decongestant one hour before departure. In Hight, chew gum or drink water regularly as swallowing may help decrease the pain. - When Hying, use saline nasal spray once every hour if necessary to keep your nasal (membranes moist. - If you have an allergy to dander, it is best to avoid staying in the homes of family or friends who own a pet. - Try to avoid second-hand ciga rette smoke by staying in a non smoking household. Respiratory Infections: Lipper respiratory infections can greatly increase the chances of suf fering asthma symptoms. If colds and flu make your asthma worse, prevention is the key to keeping your symptoms under control. - Avoid contact with large crowds, especially people who have a cold or the flu - Make sure to wash your hands frequently with soapy water for at least 20 seconds. - Avoid hand-to-eye. mouth and nose contact to prevent spreading of germs. - Get a Hu shot. - Talk to your doctor about a writ ten, individualized Asthma Action Plan [link to: http://www.asthma.ca/adults/con- trol/actionPlan.php] so you know what to do as soon as you feel a eold coming on. Winter Exercise: - Wear a scarf over your mouth and nose in order to warm air before you breathe it in. - Stretch and do other light activity to warm up before you exercise, shovel or do any other form of strenuous physical activity. Be sure to cool down when you’re done your activity. - Take all medications as pre scribed. even if you feel fine. - If it’s especially cold or icy out doors. consider going to a mall or other indoor location to do some walking or other activity. - When you exercise indoors, make sure the room is well humidified and ventilated. - When exercising outdoors, dress in layers. This will help you better manage your body heat. - Drink plenty of fluids. - If you’ve been sedentary or have health problems, check with your doctor before you begin any kind of exercise program. The above tips will help you to reduce or eliminate the environmen tal factors that could trigger an asth- ma attack during the winter months.
