date session of the, British Parliament
Slows that the number of miles of rail-
way open for traffic, in India on the lift
of April, 14,882,of which 8,911
belonged to guaranteed companies, 658
to assisted companies, 8,994 to the State
and 824 to native States. The number
of miles cpenat the end of the different
yearn; since 1884 was as toliows: 1884,
10,784; 1888, 11,982; 1886,12,876;1887
13,890; 1888,14,883. There has been a
decrease in the guaranteed lines by
Iaurchase for the State lines. The total
passenger traffic has increased year by
-. year from 58,876,916 in 1882 to 95,411,-
"779 in 1887. The receipts, which in
1S82 were 153 million rupees, reached.

in the same years respectively were
166 and 91 millions of rupees. The pro
gress of the telegraphs has been even
greater still; the 17,600 miles of- litre,
42,011 miles of wire, 249 offices, and
1,371,909 messages of 1878 ha.ve,grown
in 1887 to 30,034 miles of, line and 86,-
891 of wire 699 offices, :and: 2,554,685
messages. But the receipts do not yet
equal the expenditure, although the
termer have doubled in the ten years.
In 1878 the figures for receipts and ex-
penditure were 3-4 and 4-7 million
rupees;iu 1887 they were 6-9 and 7.1
millions. The growth and development
