in the branches of a large oak tree, buzzing

The satisfaezion this truly brave hunter
got from this experience may be told in a
few words. "Many snows previous, a party
of hunters were hunting in the neighborhood
• when a disruption arose among them. The
result was that one of them, held to have
• superhuman powers, was killed and buried
here according to the custom, with all his
worldly possessions laid alongside of him,
bow and arrow, tomahawk, small mallet,
piece of corn bread, etc., and it is believed
that he is now trying to revenge himself on The Victor's Crown

be unable to escape.
This legend is given almost as a word for
word translation from the Mohawk tongue.
One particular point which may be mentioned
is that all the Indian Tribes that I have the
honor of knowing, have some legend or
have not heard. •
Humorous views of life are well enough
as an occasional relaxation. But we are
not to find the chief joy and end of life in
these accidentally distorted perspectives.
Life itself is not a joke' • Viewed under
proper aspects, there is nothing trivial or
comm (menace about life. Its impressive
grandeur appears at every turn, -in our
choice of destiny -molding opportunities, in
mysterious and yet eternal relationships
begun, entered into, developed, interlacing
in complicated and unfathomed weavings;
in the vocations we are called to fill ; in the
work we see before us to do; in both the
fulfilments and omissions 4 the past and in
the hopes of the future. It is not in the
distorted, funny, grotesque, but in the
grandest and noblest perspectives; not in
the mere accidents, but in the mighty per -
poses, of life, -that we are to seek our chief
delight.

A. cerrespondent of Fared and Stream,
writing from Kingstou, N. Y., in rapine
to an inquiry as to the merit anlog will fon
low, when in trail of his =Mara buggy,
whether that of the horse; or the wheele,
relates this anecdote:
Seine yeara ao0 a man by the name of
Mellen was arrested in this 'city for shoot-
ing another man. idellert Was placed, in a
horse oar aria convoyed to jell at a airtime
of two miles. The horse -car was closed
except that the door in the rear end of the
ear was opened and shut on the way to let
other gassengere in and out. Mellen was
pieced in tail and the jail door locked. he
next morning his beagle dog was found ly-
ing against the jail door. offered Mellerb
$100 for that dog, but he said, no money
could buy from him au& a friend in die -
wows. Mellere was afterward acquitted
upon the theory that the killing was email
abbe under the circumstances ; but he was a
long while in jail before his trial came
off, and hie beagle was his constant
companion day and night. Now this beagle
mimed hie mmter from home some time after
his arrest, and the next morning found him
in the iaiTat a distance of two miles, awl the
dog had no doubt that bis master was there,
because he lay by the jail door sill, and this
jail door was not the outer dnor of the comt
house, but an inner door. Now what scent
did tkis beagle follow? It must have been
the scent of his master, althongh the
feet of that master never touched the
earth for a distance of two mules; and he
did not ride in an open buggy, but in a
closed horse case The horse -car landed
Mellert about 300 feet from the jail, and
from that point to the jail Mellen; walked
over flag pavements upon the sidewalk, but
before his dog came to find him, hundreds,
and perhaps thoneands of other people had
walked over the same flag sidewalk, and yet
his dog found him, and was so sure of it
that he lay down by the jail door -an inner
door in the court -house -to receive his mas-
ter when he came out. It is no wonder that
money could not buy such a faithful friend.
But what scent did he follow ?
The King's Daughtera are multiplying
rapidly, And hundreds of women • wear the
little Maltese cross which is the emblem of
the Order. So far, says The New York Sun,
the membership is confined to the orthodox
societies and congregations. The larger
numbers are said to be in the Methodist
denomination, and there are none in the
Unitarian societies. The majority of women
who are King's Daughters are also menibers
of the Temperance societies and the white
ribbon hangs beside the silver cross. The
work which the Ring's Daughters; are pledg
ed to perform is covered ingthe Uniterian
societies by the League, to which almost
every Unitarian woman belongs, In some
of the churches in Brooklyn the greaterpart
of the female members are units of a Ten,
and are engaged in some humanitarian
work. The practical oharaeter of the work
of the King's Daughters commends itself to
all classes of women, and it is an organisa-
