With reference to the city docks, the importation of States cattle commenced a month earlier then usual this year, and we have had more cattle combine here than for some years—the total reaching about 2200 as far as the aid markets are concerned. The import- ations of States cattle to Avonmouth; on the other hand, have not been so large this year, the number being rather , under 1000,whereasin some years they hale readied 2000 head. They were also a little shorter than in 1887. Can- adian n cattle have been imported orted to the p extent of 5000, and there have been 4000 sheep to hand. In comparing the prices of this year with those of 1587,. the prices of States cattle are better. the season opened with prices ranging from 54s to 60s per cwt., and these quo- tations gradually improved till in July last they reached at one time 67s per ewt.,and it might be said that generally there has been a steady trade at from 6id to 61 per lb. The .quality of the States cattle this year, it should be re- membered, has not been up to the aver- age standard of those we have been accustomed to receive here. But the quality of the Canadian cattle has fall-, en off still more. It is, true that the early importations, amounting perhaps: to about one-fifth of the total supply?, were good, and these sold at very fair prices—from 65s to 65s per cwt. But, generally speaking, the quality of the Canadians has been very indifferent, and and only. a small portion could be con- sidered suitable for the local trade. Of the late adlrrivals-so far as the last 1200 head of cattle that have arrived here -- they have been ordinary ranehe cattle, -very poor in condition, and quite unfit for the Bristol trade. They were chief- ly slaughtered at the American lairs,to be sold in the careass in London and other distant markets, to which they were forwarded direct. It will be seen. that early in the season our local trade for English cattle wasvery slightly af- fected—in fact, large dealers assure us that 11 has hardly been affected at all this year by the importation of 'foreign cattle. All thrbugh the season the best English cattle have sold at from 65s to 67s per cwt. till the' 'last few weeks, when the prices fell to about 63s to 64s A special meeting of L. O. L. No.10 71 was held at the Orange Hall, on Tues- day. Mr. E. Floody, W. County Master was present and occupied the chair. Bros. W. Sanders, of the ADVOCATII and County Secy., of Exeter; F.
