The Canadian. Chureh Union will give
the first of their series of lectures on the
"Chureh. of England” under the auspi-
ees of the "Busy Bees," of Trivitt Me-
morial'Church, in Drew's Opera House,
on Tuesday evening Dec. 18th. The

cathedrals, will be illustrated by the
lime light. This is something new to
the people of this vicinity and a large
crowd. should greet it.

Astronomers expect- interesting re-
sults from the observations of the total
eclipse of the .sun on Jan, lst. next, if
the sky is clear, in California.. The
eclipse will take place about 2 p. am.
and will be visible in totality over a
strip of country about 120 miles wide,
and will be visible as a phenomena. It
will also be tetal in Canada, a short d s-
tance north of Lake Superior, As a
partial eclipse it will be seen aver a
much wider expanse ill Ontario, where
the sun will see in partial .eclipse.

turned home.

The anniversary in connection with
the James street Methodist church took
place on Sunday and Monday; last On
Sunday the Rev. A. C. Courtice, M. A.,
13. D,, of Toronto, preached two very
able mid impressive sermons to large
eongregations, On Monday evening
tea, was served in the, basement of the I
church at which a large number partook
of an excellent repast of scald cream,v
etc. After the "inner man" had been
fully satisfied the large audienee repair-
ed to the body of the church where
some -excellent speeches were delivered
by visiting and. local clergy. The por-
eeeds were in the neighborhood of $355.

give this picture absolutely free to

alone worth the amount of the subscrip-
tion, but the Advertiser is bound to
keep its position as the most largely-
circulated journal in Western Ontario.
Its circulation is now more double that
of any other Ontario journal outside of
the Toronto press, while its numerous
editions daily—Morning, Noon and
circulated far and wide. We are as-
sured that the combined circulation of
the .A.diert'iser is larger at presentthan
ever before. It has a properous look
about it and deserves its increased
success.
Church Opening,
The Trivitt Memorial Church, which
is the finest in Western Ontario will be
opened on December 23rd' without fail.
HisLordship Bishop Baldwin will preach,
and will be assisted by a number of
other prominent English clergy. Fur-
ther particulars later on.
Open Meeting.
An open meeting of'Advance Council
No. 207, R. T. of T., will be held in the
Lecture hall of Main street Methodist
Church, on. Monday evening next. A.
good program will be provided and all
are welcome. Silver collection at the
close.

County Orange Lodge, of South Huron
met at Goderieh on Saturday last.
Every preparation is being made for
the ontortainunent of the Grand Lodge
of British America which meets in the
county teem on May 28th, 1889.
--Lawyer. Diekson was in Berlin and
Toronto for a few days last week in
the interests of the fanners who were
imide the vietimss of the notorious wheat
swindle of 1887. The matter has been
litigated now for more than a year, but
justice has at last prevailed and the
farmers have succeeded in vanquishing
the sharks. We. trust in future our
farmers will give the wheat swindlers
a wide berth.

for Winnipeg, where she intends re-
maining, for some time.

The Trivitt Memorial Churelu
This beautiful building now nearly
completed and furnished, has occupied
a paragraph in, the last two addresses
of the Bishop of Huron to the Synod of
the Diocese. On Tuesday of last week
at the. Chapter House, the Bishop spoke
as follows: "This remarkable and beau-
tiful church built entirely at the expense
of Mr. Trivitt, and whose foundation
stone I laid in August of last year, is
now, God willing, to,be openedfordivine
service on Sunday, December 23rd.
In order that as many friends as possible
may be present at the consecration, Mr.
Trivitt desires that a week day be
selected, and therefore is soon as the
date is agreed upon it will, God willing,
be made known, and I may here say
that in Mr. Trivitt's name and as chair-
man of the Building Committee and
Bishop of the Diocese, 1, extend to you
all a hearty invitation to be present
not only to enjoy and be edified by the
service but to show our living appreci-
ation of this good man for his noble and
open handed liberality in erecting to
splendid a church to the glory and
praise of God".
Changing hands.
On Tuesday next the proprietorship
of the Central hotel will be changed.
Messrs. W. T. and Jas. Acheson has
purchased it and will take possession.
They are two thorough gentleman,and
are experienced hands at the business.
We wish them every success and pros-
perity.
Amusement for Alla
"Hemming parties" are all the rage
in some parts. The invitations issued
are square, and in one corner is a needle
run throtibh the paper. Atarecent
affair of that kind, the guests 'were re-
quested to present their thimbles at the
door. Each lady was presented with a
hand -painted surah silk bag. In this
little bag was a' square of linen, with
,one end hemstitched. The ladies finish-
ing their work in the neatest hemstitch-
ing were awarded prizes. Sock darn-
ing parties alternate, when the darning
needle is the symbol of admission:

—Mr. John Rattenbury, and old. and
respected pioneer of Huron County who
'resided at Brucefaeld, , was buried • on
Saturday last. He had. reached the
ripe old age of 88 years.

A Former Townsman's Success.
