You don't need a real tree to bring
the scent of evergreen into your
home for the holiday season.
Create your own swag with the
addition of fresh flowers and fill
your home with the earthy fragrance
of pine, cedar ,and spruce. Or
decorate with ribbons, ornaments,
pine cones or dogwood for a
welcoming focal point outside your
front door.
Floral designer Luann Taylor
offers some step by step instructions
to help you on your way.
First purchase a floral cage from
your florist. Once it's been soaked in
water, begin the placement of your
greens. Use them to determine the
length for your swag. "Go for
balance," said Taylor, who suggests
using one-third at the top and two-
thirds at the bottom.
While you can find your greens
outside, _ Taylor recommends
purchasing B.C. cedar from a florist.
"It's greener, fresher, just nicer."
Other things that can be used are
seeded eucalyptus, which can be
spray-painted gold for a nice effect.
Taylor said to build towards the
centre, taking care not to have any
bare spots. "You want it nice and full
but leave room for the flowers.'
The rule of thumb for placing
flowers is to be able to place two
fingers between them.
Long-lasting flowers such as ice
cap poms, dendrobian orchids or
mini-carnations are the best choice

There are many ideas to
create unique holiday
stockings.
Let your imagination run wild
with any number of wonderful ideas
for holiday stockings. A Christmas
tradition, stockings can be used for
any of the winter holidays. Why not
wrap one up in pretty tissue paper
and give as a house-warming gift or
home for a child's favorite doll or
stuffed animal.
Revive an old sweater by making
a stocking from its 'prettiest parts.
Designed from different sweater
styles, it takes no time at all.
Stockings made from cardigans
(centre and right) need no
embellishment. Their collars are the
stockings' cuffs, their buttons the
decorations. The chest pocket of a
pullover becomes a handy holder for
candy on a ribbed-sweater stocking.
