TRY CLASSIFIED Continued from page 25 justification to abuse, humiliate, disgrace or hurt someone, especially to make yourself feel better, you are absolutely wrong. The Bible is to be read in light of the character of God. Joseph "did not want to expose her to public disgrace" (vs.19). Another remarkable statement that this text makes is by the angel to Joseph. Through an angel in a dream, Joseph is told, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins" (vs. 20b-21). God is saying I want you to take care of her. I have chosen you to be the earthly father for my Son." My wife and I had our will updated. One of the areas we struggled with is if both of us were gone, who would we appoint to be guardians for our children. Who of our family members would have time for six children? The second question was, who will instill the values that we feel are important? We had to wrestle with that decision. Here is a perfect God who has to decide to whom he will entrust his son. Any human is imperfect. God has chosen Joseph to be the man to raise God's Son. God made a decision to entrust his Son to Joseph. This was a tremendous statement. I believe the question that each of us is confronted with is, when God sees you and me does he say they will do what is right? Not right by our own standard, but right by his standard. Do we have room in our hearts for his Son? That is a question we all have to ask ourselves. Joseph had a surprise .for an interruption in his life. He handles the situation with dignity for his future wife and in the community. He does what is right. God has chosen him to raise his son. Then we hear a name given to this son, Immanuel, God with us. We too have surprises and interruptions in life. The message I believe God wants us to hear is that he is with us. Psalm 23 says, "Even though I go through the valley .of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for you are with me." Again and again God tells us he is with us in the scriptures. In this Christmas season, Jesus is the reason for the season. Have we made room for him in our lives? If not make a decision to change that on a personal basis and engage with a community of people who acknowledge Jesus as the Saviour from our sins. He gives us a peace and joy that we cannot find anywhere else. Timing of Nativity not as clear as one might think Nativity Melville Presbyterian Church presented a living nativity at a recent service. From left: Brody TenPas, Hayden TenPas, Katelynn Becker, Nicholas McArter and' Bryce Armstrong. (Photo submitted) By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen A Nativity scene. The simplest of the Christmas decorations to put up, right? Wrong, apparently. There are many schools of thought on the Nativity scene, some more sacred than others, but nothing is quite carved in stone. Also known as a creche (French for crib), a Nativity scene refers to any depiction of the birth or the birthplace of Jesus, the first of which, is said to have been created by St. Francis of Assisi in 1223. The first creche was a living scene played out in a cave in Italy on Christmas eve. Rooted in the tradition of the living Nativity, some people act it out as a play, depicting their scene after the timeline of Jesus' birth. This being said, there are several rules to be put in place if one decides to follow the story closely with their Nativity scene. Many people put the scene out in its entirety all at once and put it up and take it down when it suits them. However, there are some who think that the scene should follow a timeline. "Technically this is still Advent in most church calendars, which means that this is actually the anticipatory time," Rev. Cathrine Campbell of Melville Presbyterian Church in Brussels and Knox Presbyterian Church in Belgrave. "They're waiting. Christmas is actually when Christ is there, when Christ has come and that is reflected in the Nativity scene." A posting on LivingCatholicism.com says that theoretically, the manger should be empty until Christmas Day, when the baby Jesus is born. The next day the shepherds arrive, in early January the wise men arrive and all are together until Feb. 2, the feast day and the presentation of Jesus. Campbell says that in some churches a game is made opt of finding the baby Jestis on Christmas morning. "In some churches, they hide the figurine of the baby Jesus and they get the children to look for it and it's usually pandemonium. That's one way of doing it, but in our particular church, we just put it away," she said. "On Christmas Day, the children find the figurine and put it in and then the Nativity scene is complete and Christ has come." Another custom put into practice around the world is that some people will sing Happy Birthday to the baby Jesus after placing him in the Nativity scene on Christmas morning. One practice that came up often through research was that the Nativity scene is not taken down until twelfth night, which is the time of the Epiphany. However, things in Canada are not quite as straightforward as they are in other cultures..,Campbell says that Canada takes something from many practices around the world, which can be quite interesting. "In Canada we're kind of a mish- mash of customs and it's actually quite fun because we can pick up whatever we'd like," she said. This is especially true when searching through customs surrounding the Nativity scene used all around the world. For example; in parts of Central America Nativity scenes are built traditionally on Dec. 16, which is the first day of Posada. Churches all over the world act out living scenes with actors and members of their church and in one of the more bizarre finds on the intemet, directions on how to build your own Nativity scene out of Lego. The diversity of the scene is cne of its more charming elements, but most prefer to just set the scene out with everyone in it, the complete scene on Christmas morning.
