Court news
Woman gets suspended sentence, warning
By Duane Rollins
Wingham Advance-Times
Prescription fraud
Dolena Fowler, 48, of Wingham
pleaded guilty to eight counts of
uttering a fraudulent document.
Between Dec. 28, 2005 and Jan.
30 Fowler received pain killers from
a Wingham-based pharmacy using
forged prescriptions. She told the
court that she needed the drugs to
administer to her husband, who, she
claimed, suffers from chronic pain.
Fowler has previously served jail
time for similar offenses.
She was given a suspended
sentence and two year's probation.
Women Today of Huron is
launching a new campaign in Huron
County to help neighbours, friends
and families recognize signs of
woman abuse and to know how to
take action.
"Domestic violence is everyone's
business," said Sandra Pupatello,
Minister Responsible for Women's
Issues. "The Neighbours, Friends
and Families (NFF) campaign gives
individuals the information they
need to recognize the signs of
woman abuse and know what to do
to help."
NFF is part of a province-wide
initiative developed in partnership
with the. Ontario government, the
Ontario Women's Directorate and
the Expert Panel on Neighbours,
Friends and Families, through the
Centre for Research and Education
on Violence Against Women and
Children. Locally, the campaign is
being co-ordinated by Women Today
of Huron (WTH).
The public is invited to the official
launch of NFF in Huron County on
Nov. 24 at the Huron County
Museum in Goderich. The launch
will include an airing of the NFF
documentary which highlights the
story of Sandra Schott who was
murdered by her husband Edward
Schott before he committed suicide
near Dorchester.
A co-worker and close friend of
Sandra's tells how she saw signs of
abuse but didn't know what to do.
Sandra's sister-in-law looks back on
the couple's relationship and can
now see that Edward qualified for
almost all of the risk factors of an
abuser.
Speakers at the official launch
include Huron-Bruce MPP Carol
Mitchell, as well as representatives
of community agencies that work
together on violence prevention who
will discuss the risk factors of
woman abuse.
"Woman abuse is preventable,"
said Pam Hanington, executive
director of WTH. "Through research
An emotional Fowler screamed
"Thank you, thank you" to Judge
R.G.E. Hunter after he gave the
ruling.
Hunter told Fowler that if she
came before him again that she
would likely face a significant jail
term.
THEFT UNDER
Brian King, 40, of Wingham
pleaded guilty to theft under $5,000.
This past summer he stole about
$6 and some cigarettes from a.
parked car.
He was given 12-months
probation.
TOOK CAR WITHOUT
PERMISSION
by the expert panel, 15 warning
signs and 23 high risk factors have
been identified to help those around
the victim and abuser understand
what they are seeing and be able to
intervene. Neighbours, friends and
families have a crucial role to play in
preventing woman abuse, and this
campaign provides the tools to help
when individuals know a woman is
being abused and when a man is
being abusive."
Public service announcements,
brochures, wallet cards and posters
will be distributed throughout
Huron County as part of the
campaign. The website,
www.neighboursfriendsandfamilies.
Kelly Coulter, 19, a
developmentally challenged woman
from Listowel, pleaded guilty to
taking her parents' car without
permission.
Despite her disability, her parents
asked that Coulter be given a
sentence that "would send her a
message."
She was given a conditional
discharge and asked to pay $50 a 1
month until she had paid a total of
$500.
• Additionally, she was asked to
complete 25 hours of community
service and placed on probation for
one year.
CHRONIC DRUNK DRIVER
on.ca also provides accessible
information.
The McGuinty government is
investing $571,925 in the campaign
province-wide to help individuals
know what action to take when they
recognize the signs of woman abuse,
including information on how to
speak to abusive men.
"Talking to abusive men about
their behaviour is critical to ending
woman abuse," said Hanington.
"Knowing that support is available
helps women feel more confident
about reaching out. Working
together in our community to stand
against woman abuse will make a
significant difference."
Michael Riding, 44, formally of
the Wingham area and now residing
in Elliot Lake, pleaded guilty to
driving drunk. It was his fifth
impaired conviction.
A joint plea submission was made
asking for a 90-day jail sentence to
be served on weekends and a one
year driving suspension. Riding's
mother is ill and the request was
made to allow for him to care for her.
Hunter rejected the plea and gave
Riding one month to make
arrangements for his mother to be
cared for. He told him to expect
somewhere in the neighbourhood of
six months jail time.
Hunter also suspended Riding's
licence for three years.
Upon hearing the ruling, Riding
attempted to withdraw his plea. He
said that the three year driving
restriction was unacceptable to him.
Hunter was unsympathetic.
"I'm more concerned with the
other drivers on the road than I am
with you," he said.
The term of his jail sentence will
be determined on Jan. 18.
DRUNK DRIVING
Leonard Sangster was found
guilty of driving drunk in the
summer.
He was allowed to keep his licence
until he finished his employment,
which required him to drive.
On Dec. 14, he was given a 12-
month driving suspension and fined
$750.
The sentence was given 14-
months after the incident that led to
his arrest. Women Today of Huron
