THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2006. PAGE 23. Health unit has holiday tips to keep children safe With the holiday season around the corner, the Huron County Health Unit has some easy tips for keeping kids safe over the holidays. "Pay close attention to the recommended age on toys," says health promoter Sherri Bezaire. "Toys meant for older children may have small parts that could choke a younger child." "For children under three, do not choose toys with small parts including toys with magnets," she says. "And for infants and toddlers, avoid toys with long strings or cords." If you're lighting a fire for a cold winter's evening, a safety gate will keep curious hands off the fireplace. Little ones can burn their hands if they touch the glass barrier at the front of a gas fireplace. Make sure all holiday lights and burning candles are out of your child's reach, and that electrical cords are in good repair. Each year, Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children sees kids with electrical burns from touching hot bulbs or putting them into their mouths. If you've bought a new big-screen TV for Christmas, give it a solid base out of reach of your child. Each year, over 100 children are hurt by TV sets tipping over. Keep your television on low, sturdy furniture. Push the set as far back as it will go. Avoid decorating the lower branches of a Christmas tree. Young children are attracted to shiny, colourful things. They may chew or swallow decorations, lights and tinsel. While it's a myth that poinsettias are poisonous, mistletoe and holly are poisonous. If your child eats berries from mistletoe or holly, call the local poison information centre. Or, call the Ontario Regional Poison Centre 1-800-268-9017. When entertaining, keep visitors' purses and bags out of reach. Little fingers will explore. A child may swallow medications or play with matches. Be sure to use appropriate car seats, booster seats and seat belts for your children during holiday driving. "Remember, injuries to children often happen when they are unsupervised," says Bezaire. "Homes you visit over the holidays may not be childproofed like your own. At parties, designate someone to watch out for young children." For more information on child safety throughout the year, call-1- 888-SAFE-TIPS (1188-723-3847) or visit www.safekidscanada.ca Re-discover the beauty of the holiday season Snow has covered the ground, the trees are bare and animals scurry for a hard-to-find treat. Amidst the calm serenity of this beautiful landscape lies the hustle and bustle of holiday decorating, shopping and cooking. Now's the time to turn on your favourite holiday tunes, once again go over your guest list and look forward to the excitement that is in store. The holidays are a time for giving thanks for all that you receive and experience during the year. The sentiment becomes even more poignant against the backdrop of the country's latest trials and tribulations. However, if everyone puts aside their skepticism, prejudices and quips, this season can be one of the most memorable ever. Here are some easy ways to embrace the season of giving and joy: • Assist an elderly neighbour who has trouble heading outdoors in inclement weather. Pick up his or her groceries, shovel the sidewalk and treat him or her to a special card expressing your holiday sentiments. • Volunteer your time at a local orphanage or homeless shelter. Those without a true home can benefit from your generosity. • Set up a neighbourhood carolling group. This tradition has slowly fallen out of fashion. Revive it again and spread the season's joy to all you pass. • Save your holiday meal leftovers and donate them to a soup kitchen or shelter. • Donate extra funds to your house of worship so that holiday decorations, fundraisers, events and more will be even more spectacular. • Do something as simple as giving up your seat on the bus or train to someone as a gesture of good tidings. • Take a day off from work and allow your children to play "hookie" to do a fun family activity out of the blue, like sledding, skiing or just enjoying a mug of hot chocolate while watching the snowfall. These are just a few thoughtful ideas, and surely you can think of some more. Just remember to make this season as magical as you can.
