THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2006. Grey firefighter calendars are going fast By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen This Christmas is your last chance to pick up a 2007 Grey firefighter calendar. The calendar started as a project for the department's 50th anniversary and an idea to fundraiser for some new equipment. Five hundred of them were printed and having been in stores since June, now there is less than a fifth of them still available fofpurchase. "They just wanted a different fundraiser and they thought about an idea that us ladks had tossed around for years, which was doing a calendar," says Dianne Diehl, the calendar's photographer and Grey deputy chief David Diehl's wife. "They didn't want it to be a serious calendar, they wanted it to be funny, candid shots." There isn't much skin to bd seen in the calendar, which would have been in the true history of a firefighter calendar, but there was a split view on that. "Some of them I think would have been game to show some skin, but some of them didn't want to reveal too much either," says Diehl. The idea for a calendar was spearheaded by firefighter Pete Albers, 'who pulled many of the strings to make this idea a reality. Albers and the rest of the department went to businesses all throughout Grey asking for a donation of $100 from each, with great success, garnering almost enough . from donations alone to cover the costs. Albers said that at a print cost of $ 3 , 2 0 0 , they had donations f r o m approximately 30 businesses, coming close to recouping costs with donations alone, leaving income from sales to be almost 100 per cent profit. This partnership worked out well for all involved. All the businesses who donated carried the calendar for sale at a price of $10 each. Over 30 Grey businesses were approached. They were happy to contribute $100 to the cause, Albers said. The funds will all go back into the Grey department and they hope to be spending the money on equipment, however the final decision has not yet been made. "We were thinking to raise money for some equipment. The committee hasn't come together to discuss exactly what," Albers said. "It's still up in the air as to what we're going to use [the money] for." Grey Fire chief Calvin Semple agrees, but says that the decision as to where the money will go should be finalized within the next few months. "There's a few things up in the air that we're thinking about and when that time comes we'll let somebody know about it. It'll be for equipment though that's for sure," Semple said. Semple says he is happy with his department at how hard and fast they worked to get the calendar done and sees no reason why they can't make another one again soon which he thinks will be even better. "They took the bull by the horns and put everything together in a hurry," Semple said. • - "I think we would do it again. I mean, the community and the businesses we approached in our area were very supportive and it's a good little community thing, because the guys are from the community themselves. It makes for a good little keepsake for one thing." Albers says he's happy with how things turned out and that once the calendars are gone, he will be a happy man. "They're 2007 calendars and we started selling them in June for Grey's 150th anniversary and we sold a bunch of them then," Albers said. " We'll just sell the calendars until they're gone and then we'll be happy."
