On Sunday, Dec. 10, Pat Hunking
greeted worshippers and handed out
the Service of Worship at Knox
United Church.
Rev. Ethel Miner Clare welcomed
everyone to the Sunday school white
gift service. This was followed by
the singing of Jesus, Our Brother
and Hope Is A Star.
The Higgins family lit the Advent
candle, a symbol of God's promise
of peace, comfort and strength. The
Choral Response was A Candle Is
Burning.
The prayer was led by Lindsay
Shiell.
The junior choir sang Go Tell It
On the Mountain, and Come on,

Elizabeth Stennett at the piano and
The regular Christmas meeting of
Knox United Church Women
Evening Group was held at the home
of Muriel Coultes on Tuesday, Dec.
5 with 11 members present. Louise
Bosman was in charge of the
meeting and she welcomed everyone
and opened with a poem, sleigh
bells.
The roll call was answered with
sharing a tradition your family holds
around Christmas.
Christmas is People was the theme
Lila Procter directing.
For children's time, Rev. Clare
told them of the symbol, the candy
cane. The cane is like a staff used by
shepherds in caring for sheep. Jesus
is their Good Shepherd.
She told them of a man who
wanted to make something special
for the people of the church. He
made hard candy, because he
remembered that Jesus was like a
rock, strong and dependable.
If you turn the candy cane upside
down it is a J. The peppermint
flavour is like the gift of spices from
the Wise Men. The white candy
stands for Jesus as the holy, sinless
son of God. The colour red is for
God's and Jesus' love.
The stripes reminds of Jesus
of the program, and several members
took part, describing the events
around the Christmas story. Mrs.
Bosman read about the prophecies
that had been made, the story of
Advent in Germany and Italy and the
start of the custom of the Advent
wreath.
The Advent candles were lit by
Mabel Wheeler, and she told of the
Italian custom of leaving fruit out
and singing songs at Advent.

suffering. His crown of thorns, the
wounds in His hands and feet and
the cross on which He died.
The scripture reading was taken
from James 3: 2-12 and was read by
Andrea Shiell.
The Sunday school entertained
with the drama entitled Mr.
Peabody's Apples.
The offering was collected by
Mike and Shawn Cottrill and
Michelle Burrs and Meagan Carter.
The white gift offering was taken
up by Matthew Cottrill, Jessica
Procter, Trevor Raynard and Laura
Higgins. The white gift offering was
going to be used to sponsor a student
for a school in Mozambique. The
cost is $300.
Prayers of the People were led by
Chris Shiell and read in unison by
the congregation.After the worship_
service lunch and fellowship
followed in the basement.
On Dec. 17 it will be Advent 3
with worship at 11 a.m.
