Louise Bosman was in charge of the meeting and she welcomed everyone and opened with a poem, sleigh bells. The roll call was answered with sharing a tradition your family holds around Christmas. Christmas is People was the theme Lila Procter directing. For children's time, Rev. Clare told them of the symbol, the candy cane. The cane is like a staff used by shepherds in caring for sheep. Jesus is their Good Shepherd. She told them of a man who wanted to make something special for the people of the church. He made hard candy, because he remembered that Jesus was like a rock, strong and dependable. If you turn the candy cane upside down it is a J. The peppermint flavour is like the gift of spices from the Wise Men. The white candy stands for Jesus as the holy, sinless son of God. The colour red is for God's and Jesus' love. The stripes reminds of Jesus of the program, and several members took part, describing the events around the Christmas story. Mrs. Bosman read about the prophecies that had been made, the story of Advent in Germany and Italy and the start of the custom of the Advent wreath. The Advent candles were lit by Mabel Wheeler, and she told of the Italian custom of leaving fruit out and singing songs at Advent. Continued on page 13 suffering.
