Girls split weekend action
The Saugeen Maitland PeeWee A
Girls hockey team played four
league games over the weekend
splitting the games with two wins
and two losses.
On Nov. 25 the girls travelled to
Walpole Island to play Chatham.
Saugeen won both games with
scores of 7-0 and 5-3. The shutout in
game one went to Kortney Watson
(Kincardine) who was solid all
game.
In game one goals went to Shelsie
Popp (two), Laura McKenzie,
Jayleen Kirkland, Laura Irwin, Sara
Gossell and Dollee Meigs. In game
two goals went to Hannah Davidson
(two), Laura McKenzie, Dollee 3.
It was mixed results for the Huron
Perth Minor Atom AAA Lakers
when they competed in the Guelph
Power Play Tournament this past
weekend.
On Friday, Nov. 24 at 11:30 a.m.
the squad met Ajax at the Fergus
Community Centre. This was a less
than ideal start to the tournament
with the Lakers falling short by a
score of 4-2.
Cullen Mercer got both Laker
goals, with assists from Dylan
Nafziger, Evan Chaffe and Wyatt
Ducharme.
Earning the honour of game MVP
was goalie Ben Larder.
It was a different story that
afternoon when the team played
Niagara Falls at the Centennial
Arena in Guelph.
Leading the Lakers in goals for
this 4-3 victory was Kenny Huether
with two, Mercer and Mykal
Hodges. Assists went to Ducharme,
Meigs and Abbey Gibson.
On Nov. 26 the Saugeen team
played host to Belmont for two more
games. Unfortunately the girls
played the host side a bit too
strongly and lost both games by
scores of 5-2 and 5-2.
Saugeen goals over the two games
went to Laura Irwin (two), Sara
Gossell and Taylor Gilkinson.
The Saugeen Maitland team is still
leading the South West Girls Hockey
League division but the gap is
narrowing. The girls have a week to
forget the losses and get it turned
around as they're off to a
tournament in Whitby Dec. I, 2 and
Chaffe, Hodges, Keirnyn Campbell
and Huether.
Goalie Riley O'Keefe was the
MVP.
In game three, the team faced off
against York Simcoe Express • on
Saturday at Guelph's West End
Recreation Centre. The final score
was 2-2.
Huether scored both Laker goals.
Assists went to Campbell, Eric
MacPhee and Hodges.
Left-winger Campbell was named
MVP.
With a win and a tie the Lakers
advanced to Sunday's semi-finals,
where they came up against the
Central Ontario Wolves at the West
End Recreation Centre.
The Wolves put an end to the
Lakers play with a 4-2 victory.
Mercer and Huether scored for the
Lakers with Chaffe picking up an
assist.
The MVP was centre Mercer.

of 14-5.

Wheeler defeating Irvin / Elliott
7-6.
In afternoon play John Nixon was
the 11-4 winner over Stewart
Leedham. Les Shaw continued his
winning way with a 7-5 win over •
Bruce Robertson.
The game of the day was the
match between Bill Deans and Mac
Inglis. Down 8-5 after seven ends
Deans picked up a big threecount in
eight to tie the game.
Then in the extra end it looked like
Deans would win with three rocks
on the rings and Inglis with one rock
to deliver. But the Belmore curling
master in his cool calm manner, hit
the shot rock and rolled in to
count one to walk away with the
victory.
