There's music in the air, and it seems it's Christmas music. The advertising has begun to get serious and the bazaars and musicat events are being offered fast and furious. The Toronto Santa Claus parade was on the television on Sunday The Brussels, Morris and Grey Diabetic Group met at Huronlea, Brussels on Wednesday, Nov. 15 with 18 in attendance. Guest speaker, Perry May, spoke on the cause, effect and prevention of a number of foot problems that affect all, but especially those with diabetes. In particular he spoke of neuropathy where you lose the feeling in the nerve endings in your feet. He cited different experiences in his practice where patients had stepped on something — from a nail to a child's toy — and could not feel the damage to their foot. Check your feet daily, wear white socks, buy good fitting shoes, shop with a segment on the planning and work that goes .into this very large production. This is the 102nd parade and like many traditions it has evolved, but some things just need to stay the same. The joy of children is the main focus and all decisions are grounded in that fact. Mother Goose and Santa are the only floats that are present every year and no matter how old our imagination is, those two characters are the grounding for keeping the imagination, innocence, acceptance, joy and fun, that separates the Christmas lovers from the bah humbug folks. So starting with the Eaton's and their store, and continuing with the elves of Toronto it was a fine parade, for shoes in the afternoon and get to a professional if you find a problem. The meeting ran late so the only business discussed, as lunch was being served, was the upcoming meetings and the conflicting April date with the diabetic education day in Mitchell. The discussion of finance was deferred to the March meeting. At that meeting Linda Kieffer, nurse educator working at both Wingham and Listowel hospitals, will be the speaker. The lunch committee organized a festive lunch. A wish for a safe and healthy holiday season was expressed by all. Lull of music and children, all ready to make the spirit of Christmas come alive once again. A good view of the Seaforth Girl's Band was part of the parade and a chance to be reminded of a great tradition that makes our municipality proud. Plans for Christmas are in the works and a few of the parties have been held or are in the stages of coming to be. Getting festive in November is a little tricky as the rain and wind continues. Sometimes I think we get a little carried away doing the Christmas gatherings in early fall and then when the true season is upon us, we're tuckered. So be sure to pace your energy and keep the mood festive and bright. We've had lots of experience lately with the health system as consumers and friends of consumers and I'm pleased to report all systems are working well. Ralph's hand is working just fine, thank you and it's nice to see when doctors are actually proud of their work and acknowledge that they are quite pleased as well. So it's with gratitude that I think about the history, changes, challenges and reality of our national health coverage. Thank you for our system where everyone is equal and the threat of bankruptcy is not part of our health concerns. Horror stories abound but like everything else, unless you were there ... Get your parade duds out and get _ready to support the Brussels version of the Santa Claus parade at 5 p.m. Saturday. Then it's onto the arena for nourishment and free skating. Enjoy the week.
