Inclement weather drives service indoors
By Jo-Ann McDonald
A dreary, rainy day was the
weather for this Remembrance Day
for the crowd of over 150 people.
The decision was made to hold the
service indoors as the rain came
down for the veterans' comfort as
well as others in attendance. It was
close quarters for everyone and we
appreciate all who attended the
service.
Padre Tom Wilson led the service
with president Jo-Ann McDonald
leading the laying of the over 40
wreaths in memory of the fallen
comrades and wreaths laid by family
in memory of loved ones.
At the 1 1 th hour, the Act of
Remembrance and two minutes of
silence were held.
The weather cleared enough for
the parade to march to Melville
Presbyterian Church for a service of
personal reflections, of memories of
veterans, known by Rev. Cathrine
Campbell.
Following the parade back to
Branch 218, over 100 enjoyed a light
lunch provided by the Branch.
Over 20 Comrades travelled to
Huronlea to conduct a service of
remembrance for all who gathered
with a special playing of Amazing
Grace by Pipe Major Don Martin on
the bagpipes. A social time and
visiting with the residents followed.
The normal routine of the Branch
was followed last week with the
Cadets holding drill team practice on
Mondays and the regular Cadet
meeting on Tuesdays.
There are around 30 Cadets in the
Corps and many of them attended
Remembrance Day service. Two
Cadets were proud gun bearers and
two were part of the colour party.
The Thursday night darts saw 10
players come out to take aim at the
boards.
The Friday night supper had a
turnout of nearly 40. Pork chops
were on the menu and this week is
roast beef.
The Branch is taking part in the
Huron County Christmas Bureau
and a drop-off box is at the Branch.
New clothes, toys and food or cash
are gratefully accepted to be passed
on to the Bureau.
This is the last month to get in on
the early bird price for 2007 dues.
Membership chairman Greg Wilson
reports nearing 100 paid members at
this time and hopes for the rest by
the end of NOvember.
The Branch still collects pop tabs
and has the medical supplies for
short-term loan.
On Nov. 25 the Branch is
celebrating its 75th anniversary with
a banquet. Legion members are
encouraged to attend.
A district honour for the Branch is
the guest speaker. Comrade Jack
Frost is the Dominion President of
the Royal Canadian Legion.
Comrade Jack made his run for
Provincial and Dominion Command
positions while being a member of
the Port Elgin Branch.
Rick and I have had the pleasure
of meeting Comrade Jack and his
wife Lynn at Legion functions and
he is a very friendly and down-to-
earth kind of guy.
I encourage all our Branch
members to join us in celebrating the
anniversary and meet Comrade Jack:
Tickets are $10 per person for the
banquet and are available at the
Branch or call 519-887-6570.
