Women honoured by Anglican Diocese
On Sunday, Oct. 29 Bishop Bruce
Howe and Bishop Bob Bennett
honoured nearly 70 members of the
Anglican Diocese of Huron with
Bishop's Awards for Excellence in
Ministry.
The ceremony took place at
London's, St. Paul's Cathedral.
These awards, by extension,
hondur the many thousands of
Anglicans in Southwestern Ontario,
who serve not only their church, but
their community as well. Two locals
were among the honourees.
For almost 50 years Marie
McCutcheon of Brussels has been a
vital member of the Anglican family
in Brussels. She served for many
years as the secretary of the parish
council; as the vestry clerk for the
congregational vestry meetings and
has served for the past 10 years as
the envelope secretary.
McCutcheon has continued as
alternate organist whenever called
Silent protest
Emily Kerkhof, 13 of Brussels,
took part in a day of silence as
a protest against abortion.
(Photo submitted)
Often when a person really
believes in something they want to
stand up and be heard.
Emily Kerkhof of Brussels tried a
different approach. On Oct. 24, the
Grade 8 student gave up her voice
for a day "for the babies who have
had their lives taken away in the
abortion holocaust."
She wasn't alone as 1,400 schools
had participants in what has become
a national day of silence and
solidarity to recognize the unborn's
right to life. The campaign is part of
Stand True Ministries, a Christ,
centred pro-life group.
Despite her young age, Kerkhof
has come to feel quite strongly about
the. issue of abortion. She quotes
Psalm 139, —You have created in my
inmost being, you knit me together
in my mother's womb.' I believe this
means that God has created each
baby for a purpose. We don't know
what they might be when they grow.
But those poor little babies don't
have a chance to live."
Kerkhof said her convictions have
not come from any outside
influence, not even her parents. Her
father John concurs. "We had
nothing to do with this. She's very
spiritual."
Kerkhof was first touched by the
issue, when she was at a
convention/vacation at Kingdom
Bound Ministries, a Christian music
upon by the music director. When
not serving as organist, she is an
active and vital member of the St.
John's choir.
McCutcheon has also been a
member of the ACW at St. John's
for many years, serving most
recently as the secretary for the
Evening Unit.
For over 40 years she has been a
keen supporter of St. John's
Stewardship projects through her
generous supply of her homemade
goodies, especially her jams and
preserves which have become
famous in the _Brussels area and
beyond.
For almost 50 years Joan Watson
of Blyth _ has been an integral
member of the Trinity Church
family in Blyth.
During her 20 years as church
treasurer she was the epitome of the
perfect treasurer: thorough,
dedicated, meticulous in record
festival. "Stand True Ministries had
a booth there and I read the
information and thought, 'Wow,
those poor little children.—
When it is suggested to her that
she is tackling a pretty controversial
subject at an impressionable age,
Kerkhof responds emphatically. "I
feel strongly about this because poor
little babies are having their life
taken away." According to
information from Stand True, one-
third of the pregnancies in Canada
are terminated.
With permission from her
principal and teacher Kerkhof made
it through the entire day in silence.
She even put duct tape on her mouth
on her way to and from school, at
home and later at Cadets that
evening.
"Believe me it's not in her nature
to be, silent," said her father. "We
were amazed. She absolutely did it."

keeping, and a 'watch dog' that
advised the rest of the Parish
'Council. It was especially critical to
have her skills during Trinity's
building of their church hall in the
1990s.
Now retired from the treasurer's
position, Watson continues as
envelope secretary, manages the
catering account and shares her
extensive knowledge of Trinity's
financial affairs through her
membership on Parish Council.
She has been a member of
Trinity's Altar Guild for over 30
years and is always willing to adjust
her personal schedule to meet the
needs of the parish.
Watson is also a faithful and
dedicated worker at Trinity's many
catering events, with her celebrated
lemon pies in tow.
