Brussels Tykes
eke out a victory
Crash into me
Breaking a 3-3 tie in the closing seconds of the game, the Huron-Perth AAA Minor Atom
Lakers were defeated by the Cambridge Hawks with a score of 4-3 last Saturday in Brussels.
This collision was one of many with these players who really know how to throw their weight
around. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
Kings rule over Seaforth,
Boven to score.
The Kings' wingers Marc Dery and
Roetcisoender earned assists on
another goal scored by Drost.
Roetcisoender passed the ball up to
Drost who scored the final goal
before the end of the first period.
Roetcisoender scored the two goals
that were earned in the second period
for Blyth. The assist for the first goal
came form Drost and Tristan
Miltenberg earned the assist on
second goal. The Kings won the game
with a 7 - 0 shutout against Seaforth.
The Kings' goalkeeper Derek
Logtenberg played a good game in
net to earn a shutout for his team.
There was five minutes left on the
clock, so the teams practised overtime
play. Roetcisoender was successful at
taking a shot on net and scoring the
only overtime goal. It was almost
saved by an aggressive Seaforth
player, but it deflected off his hand
and went into the net.
Coaches Jen Miltenberg and Kay
Logtenberg were very pleased with
the effort of each player throughout
the game.
The Kings have several new players
this year and coaches were very
impressed with how well each player
listened to the coaches' instructions.
The coaches handed out the Man of_
the Match award to Tristan
Miltenberg. He has always, played
defence, but when called up to play
winger after a teammate was injured,
he stepped up to the position and tried
his best to do what was asked.
This was a great start to the season
for the team.
and scored two more in the third.
With only 17 seconds left in the
game Waechter scored his second to
tie it.
The game ended at 3-3. Johnston
played a great game.
The next home game for Brussels is
Nov. 11 at noon against Mitchell.
Brussels Atoms lose to Mitchell
The Blyth Kings Bantam boys
travelled to Seaforth to play their first
game of the season, against
Seaforth's co-ed Bantam team on
Oct. 25.
The Kings are 12 and 13 years old.
They hail from Blyth, Lucknow,
Auburn, Kingsbridge and
surrounding areas.
After a short warm-up, the centre
face-off was called to start the game.
Just 12 seconds in Blyth centre Brent
Drost was successful in getting the
ball into the net after a beautiful pass
from winger Greg Roetcisoender.
Drost scored the next goal of the
game and Roetcisoender earned the
assist for Blyth. The next goal was a
real team effort when Alex Hogan
passed the ball to Andy Bolinger who
passed to rookie player Brendan
The Brussels Local League Atoms
had a busy weekend with their first
game of the season starting off in
Mitchell on Friday night.
Coach Ken Higgins, with trainer
Bob Hruska had their hands full in
this effort which finished with an 8-1
loss. Brian McArter is manager.
Goalie Austin Johnston was all over
the puck and played a spectacular
game.
Playing this season are Luke
McCutcheon, Reece McArter, Scott
Dolmage and Colton Hastings.
Forwards are Josh Bridge, Ben
Hruska, _ Curtis Bloemberg, Taylor
Higgins, Tim Waechter, Jason Baxter,
Loan Clark and Lexi Smith.
The only goal of the game for
Brussels was scored by Hruska,
-assisted by Dolmage and Hastings.
Serving the only penalty of the
game was Hastings, two minutes for
. hooking.
Hastings leads the penalty minutes
for the season.
The next day was a better story as
Brussels hosted Milverton. The game
started with a Milverton goal and
Brussels bounced back with one. Tim
Waechter drove one in unassisted.
Lexi Smith brought Brussels up by
one with assists by Reece McArter
and Logan Clark.
Milverton was not giving up easily
The Brussels Tykes (kids born in
1999 and 2000), coached by Greg
Wheeler, opened the 2006-2007
hockey season with a home game
against Elma Logan. These kids
have been practising their moves for
several weeks and all their
enthusiasm and hard work is paying
off.
It took seven shots on the net
before Elma Logan was able to
score.
Brussels was quick to come back
with Delayna Smith scoring her first
goal of the season, assisted by
Wyatt Machan.
Elma Logan __took a few more
shots before taking a 2-1 lead.
Not to be outdone, Smith put in
an unassisted goal to tie the score 2-
2 at the end of the first.
Elma Logan scored on a rebound
early in the second period to take a
3-2 lead.
Back and forth action continued
for several shifts until Logan
Kellington got his first goal of the
season, assisted by Avery McArter.
Third time was the charm for
Machan. Having taken shots earlier,
one going right over the net and the
second attempt hitting the post, he
bulged the twine, assisted by
Bennett Newell.
Kailey Wheeler scored her first
goal of the season, with just two
minutes to spare at the end of the
second period.
Elma Logan scored two more
goals in the third, but it was Smith
earning her first hattrick, assisted by
Noah Terpstra and her brother,
Hudson Smith, that allowed
Brussels to take the win with a final
score of 7-6.
Dylan McNeil, Konrad McArter,
Dean Scarrow, Sierra Hiemstra,
Connor Bridge, Ronan Jared, Kody
Harding, and Daniel Fritz all helped
out their teammates. Elma Logan
gave Brussels goalie, Derrick
Waechter, a chance to show
everyone that he has been practising
his skills. He saved 17 shots
throughout the game.
Assisting Wheeler on the bench
were Brian McArter, and Gary
Terpstra.
The Tykes travel to Seaforth this
weekend for an exhibition game.
