Although the river is barely seen from the main street, it defined the town and, at times, made it into an island (spring floods). The Village of Blyth ... The village of about 1000 people was founded in 1877. Many of its buildings still retain a Cape Dutch style of detailing that was popular after the Boer War. Today it has a quaint, charming ambience. Former and merged community names include: Blythe, Drummond and Drummond- ville. Locals pronounce the name of their town like "bly-eth" rather than "blithe". The Township of East Wawanosh ... Although settlement began in East Wawanosh in the 1850s, it did not become East Wawanosh Township until 1866 when an Act of Parliament divided Wawanosh into two townships - East and West Wawanosh. This township was the only township in Huron County given an aboriginal name. It was named after Chief Joshua Wawanosh of the Chippewa (Ojibwa) people who signed a treaty in 1825 renouncing their tribes' title to all their lands - which extended into this area. The Town of Wingham,Village of Blyth, and Township of East Wawanosh amalgamated in 2001 to form the Township of North Huron. 2
