Putting their Best Start forward
The tounties of Huron and Perth are kicking off their Best Start program by cutting some
ribbon this past week in Wingham. The Sacred Heart daycare facility hopes to be up and going
by March 2007, but for now they're split into two buildings, but the kids don't seem to
mind. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

N. Huron says no
to new item auctions
Business people in North Huron
no longer need to worry about losing
business to auctions.
At its Oct. 16 meeting council
passed a bylaw forbidding auction
sales of new items and fundraisers
that sell "home party" items from
doing so in township facilities.
The issue was first discussed at the
Oct. 10 committee of the whole
during the report of Pat Newson,
director of recreation and facilities.
New son explained that the
recreation and facilities committee
had worked with staff to develop a
policy around auctions and
fundraising sales. This had been
initiated after a sales auction group
approached the township about
renting one of its facilities for a sales
auction.
Council has received complaints
about this in the past from local
business owners, however, who feel
the auctions compete with them.
The bylaw states now that the
renters for large events may have
local vendors set up displays or sales
venues in areas that have been rented
as long as the vendors are affiliated
with the event as a sponsor.
The facility manager will enforce
strict guidelines as to size and
location of the display and the sales
area. They cannot impact the general
flow of traffic or other activities in
the facility.
Auctions of used items or where
items have been donated and where
100 per cent of the proceeds are
going to a local charity or
community group are acceptable.
Large scale types of sales events,
such as a farmers' markets must have
council approval.
