Film festival in Stratford? Maybe this fall
By Stew Slater
Special to The Citizen
The widely acclaimed Toronto
International Film Festival had its
beginnings in Stratford in 1962,
before relocating to the big city in
1976. At least that's the story
according to documentary
filmmaker and producer Craig
Thompson, a Stratford native and
recently-returned resident who now
hopes to start a new film festival in
the Shakespearean city next autumn.
Thompson and associate Charlene
Gordon attended meetings of both
North-east Huron County is
holding its 14th annual Christmas in
the Country studio tour on Nov. 11
and 12.
Spokesperson Bev. Woodley
promises that this year will be
bigger and better than years past,
with 10 locations to visit this year.
"We are in the heart of Mennonite
country and it's so pleasant to see
the horse and buggies going past or
working in the fields. It's a constant
reminder of a different time and a
peaceful way of life," Woodley said.
"I think our, prices reflect that too.
When we started 14 years•ago, there
were only two places that took part.
Just look at how we've grown by
working together."
Featured locations will be the
Country Shop, featuring a large
selection of country home decor.
Travelling north on Belmore Line
gets you to the Country Shop and it
features free horse-drawn carriage
rides between 2 and 4 p.m. on
Sunday.
Further north on Belmore Line
the Huron-Perth Catholic and Avon
Maitland school boards earlier this
week, promoting their vision for a
Stratford-based, • student-friendly
documentary film festival, and
requesting assistance in the form of
letters of support.
"In exchange, the board will be
recognized as a supporting partner,
and your name will be out there for
people to see during the festival,"
Thompson told Huron-Perth trustees
during their regular meeting,
Monday, Oct. 23.
Thompson grew up in Stratford,
and credited his involvement in

Next is Ceramic Friends in Gorrie.
A great gift shop for Christmas as
well as a store-wide no tax sale.
Directly across the street in Gorrie
is Beehaven Consignment Clothing
and Gifts. This store features hot
apple cider, baked goods as well as
used clothing, crafts, household
items and gifts.
South on Victoria St., still in
Gorrie, brings you to Coulter's
Corner, featuring Chair pads, table
runners, place mats, etc:
Still in Gorrie, you'll find Epicure
Selections on Princess St. This store
is only open on Saturday when they
will be hosting a tasting party.

whether it's jewellery, books, bath

Just outside of Gorrie on Hwy. 87
is B&B Baskets and Gifts, which is

school student for pointing his career
in a direction which eventually took
him to national prominence: He
produced documentaries for the
CBC and Global television, and
became one of the driving forces
behind the internationally-acclaimed
Banff Television Festival.
In recent years, he returned to
Stratford, producing the Manic
Organic cable television show for
two years before returning to the
production of documentaries.
' Now, a dominant focus is next
year's inaugural documentary
also featuring a no tax weekend.
Items found here will range from
scented animals, ornaments, angels
to their specialty, gift baskets.
Halfway between Molesworth and
Ethel you'll find Glen Farms Herbs
and Preserves. This country store
carries preserves, gift baskets,
kitchen ware and garden ware.
And finally, on Saturday only,
between 11:15 a.m. and 1 p.m., the
Wroxeter United Church bazaar will
be serving soup, sandwichs desserts
and drinks, all for an affordable six
dollar pricetag.
Flyers and more information is

festival, in which he hopes to
involve high school students by
offering daytime seminars and
screenings between Wednesday and
Friday, Oct. 16-18.
From the school boards;
Thompson and Gordon requested
letters of support to be included with
funding applications. They also
wondered if the boards might be able
to quantify the projected costs for
staff and resources, -if the
documentary festival is chosen by
teachers as a destination for a class
field trip.
"We're not looking for you to
commit extra money to send
students to the festival," Gordon
clarified. Instead,, she hopes to
"leverage" those estimates of 'the
costs committed by the school
boards, also in funding applications.
At the Catholic board, the support
was unanimous.
"It's an exciting proposal and we
look forward to being a partner in
it," said education director Larry
Langan.
