Robin McGauley Blyth United Church There is a quote from the famous poet, Emily Dickensen, that I absolutely love. I remember the first time I read it laughing with delight and sharing in her sentiment. She wrote "consider the lilies is the only commandment I ever obeyed." Now, I don't think any of us ever thought of considering the lilies as a commandment, but I personally have grown to indeed consider this as one of the commandments of Jesus. To me 'consider the lilies' prescribes a way of life that benefits the lives of others and that prevents the harm of others. When Jesus tells us to consider the lilies he is telling us to approach life in a very particular way, a way that is respectful of creation and all things on earth, but what is more, to seek to be like the lilies. The lilies do not toil or spin, they do not worry about their food and clothing says Thsus, rather they recognize that God is the source of all that they need, and so they trust that God will provide for them. It seems to me that considering the lilies, and mimicking the lilies, is a Melville Guild entertains Kincardine WMS The October meeting of the Melville Guild was held in the church parlour on Tuesday, Oct. 17. Nine members and seven visitors from Kincardine enjoyed a potluck lunch. President, Leona Armstrong, welcomed the Kincardine ladies and the meeting was opened with everyone repeating the purpose of the Women's Missionary Society. Mrs. Armstrong read a story, Life and the hymn, Here and Now our God is Watching O'er Us was sung. Mrs. Armstrong read the topic What Does the Lord Require of Us? Cathrine Campbell read the scripture, James 1: 19-25. Dona Knight read a poem Beatitudes for Friends of the Aged and Alice Marks led in prayer. Mary Huether read a story All I Really need to Know I learned from Noah and the Ark. Jean Bewley introduced the guest speaker, Winnifred Mann. Mrs. Mann gave an interesting talk on Continued on page 32 very important commandment for us in this day in age. We live in a society that no longer acknowledges God as the source of all things in creation. We live in a society that exploits the world's resources, that takes more than what is needed and obscures the line between our wants and our needs. We live in a world that encourages the ownership of the natural resources, like water, airspace, forests, instead of viewing them as gifts to be shared by all. We live in a society that believes that it is up to the individual person to provide for themselves. In the mists of this society we hear Jesus again calling us to consider the lilies, to recognize that what we need comes from God. It seems to me that this season of Harvest is a wonderful time to be reminded of God as creator and sustainer, and of God's call to us to be stewards of creation. Being a steward is being a care-giver, it is the task of looking after something that does not belong to us, it has simply been entrusted in our care. God calls us to be stewards of creation, to recognize that the earth and all of its resources do not belong to us, they belong to God, and so from the earth we are to take only what we need and give back all that we possibly can. This is intended by God to be quite a freeing approach to life. Being a steward of creation is a gift, it means we do not need to be worried about whether we will have enough, where pur food and clothing will come from. Living out the call to be a steward is to realize that there is always enough, and enough for everyone. My hope in this season is that we live everyday in deep gratitude for what God has given us, that we recognize that the food on our plates is a Divine gift and that we take only what we need so that there is enough for everyone, around the world and for generations to come. And that in everything we do we consider the lilies and know ourselves to be held lovingly in God's care.
