Midget Lakers ranked
among nation's top 25
It was a blowout for the Blyth
Atom Rep Bulldogs when they
visited Zurich, Oct. 18.
Dustin Treble enjoyed a fairly
quiet game in net as he and his
teammates trounced their hosts 14-
3.
The game was tight in the first
period with Matt VanWyk scoring
two for Blyth, while Zurich snuck
one by Treble. Spencer Stevenson
assisted on the second of VanWyk's
goals.
The second period pretty much
put the game out of reach for Zurich,
however, as Blyth shut them down,
and added five to their tally. Scoring
were Dustin Pennington with a
hattrick, VanWyk and Wyatt Carey,
unassisted. Assists went to Mike
VanWyk and Dylan Brcimley with
two, Dalton Richmon, Trystan
Weber and Carey.
Blyth continued to dominate in
the final period, allowing two goals
against, and scoring seven. Bulging
the twine for the visitors were
Stevenson and Bromley with two
each, Mike Van Wyke, Richmond
and Pennington. Stevenson's first
goal was an unassisted effort.
Assists went to Bromley with two,
Stevenson, Richmond, Weber with
two, both VanWykes and Carey.
Zurich goals were scored by Brett
McAllister with two and Steven
Thielk. Assisting were Sydney
Groot and McAllister.
It was a closer contest when the
team faced off against Listowel
away Oct. 20.
Dalton Carey was between the
pipes for Blyth.
The visitors came out strong with
two first-period goals, while
allowing none. Josh VanSoest,
unassisted, and. Mike VanWyk,
assisted by Wyatt Carey lit the light
for Blyth.
As of Oct. 16 the Huron Perth
Lakers AAA Major Midget hockey
team was ranked 22nd out of 149
teams in the country and 1 I th in
Ontario, out of 63 teams.
After losing 5-2 on Monday, Oct.
16 to the Waterloo Wolves and
ending their six game winning
streak, the team responded with
back-to-back victories against
Hamilton Friday and Kitchener on
Sunday.
The Lakers traveled to Waterloo to
face the second ranked team in
the nation. Despite scoring first,
the Lakers were handed their
second loss of the year, with a 5-2
setback.
Scoring goals were Jacob Brown
and Chris Holmes. Picking up
assists were Dorian Temlin, Tyler
Van Druilen, Kurtis Bartliff, and
Holmes.
On Friday the Lakers were on the
road again in Hamilton, playing
against the Reps. The team came out
flat and found themselves trailing 2-

Girls 11 and 12 — first, Kelsey

Yungblut, Howick; third, Caroline
McDowell, East Wawanosh;
winning team, Howick.
Girls 13 — first, Chelsea Zurbrigg,
1 after the first period. They were
-able to gain the lead in the second
and held on for a 5-3 win.
Goals were scored by Holmes
with two, Bartliff, Lorenz
Guntensperger and Andrew Van
Vliet of Brussels. Assisting on the
goals were Bartliff with two, Temlin,
Brown, Jared Carr, Tyler Masson,
and Colin Thompson.
Clayton Fritsch won his fourth
straight game in goal.
Sunday night the Midgets hosted
the Kitchener Jr. Rangers in
Goderich. The Lakers found
themselves behind 1-0 after the first
period, but scored two second-
period goals, and exploded for four
more in the third, for a convincing 6-
1 victory. Despite being short-
staffed, the Midgets got stronger as
the game went on and were very
effective on special teams, scoring
three powerplay goals and one
shorthanded goal.
The Seaforth connection of Matt
Chaput, Lorenz Guntensperger, and
Howick; second, Tori Hinschberger,
Grey; third, Lieke Kuijpers, Grey;
winning team, Howick.
Boys eight and under — first,
Daniel Lichty, Grey; second, Ethan
Versteeg, Howick; third, Wes
Kleges, East Wawanosh; winning
team, East Wawanosh.
Boys nine and 10 — first, Brook
McLean, Grey; second, Bailey
Poels, Turnberry; third, Mitchell
Kellington, Brussels; winning team,
Brussels.
Boys .11 and 12 — first, Ryan
Drabiuk, East Wawanosh; second,
Garret Stafford, Howick; third, Ryan
Sholdice, Grey; winning team, Grey.
Boys 13 and over — first, Bill
Tyler Van Drunen had a big game,
combining for 11 points. Chaput
scored two goals and two assists.
Van Drunen scored once and
assisted three times. Guntensperger
had one goal and set up two more.
Vlasis Aroutzidis and Van Vliet also
scored goals while other assists went
to Temlin and Brown.
Evan Groenestege had a strong
game in goal shutting down
Kitchener in the final two periods.
The Lakers are now one third of
the way into the regular season
schedule and have eight wins and
just two losses. The team is in first
place in the west division and
second in the Alliance league behind
first place Waterloo.
The Major Midgets travelled to
Aylmer Wednesday night to face the
Elgin Middlesex Chiefs.
Their next home game is Sunday,
Oct. 29 against the Brantford 99ers.
Game time is at 3:30 p.m. at the
Goderich , Maitland Recreation
Centre.

The home team made things tense
in the second when they matched
Blyth's scoring three for three. Matt
VanWyk scored two, with an assist
from his brother, Mike on the
second goal. Stevenson, with a
hand-off from VanSoest scored his
team's fifth goal.
Blyth held off the Listowel
offence in the third, and added one
more to their tally when Mike
VanWyk skated in alone for the final
goal.
The score was 6-3.
