PAGE 35. Entertainment Leisure Bayfield artist featured exhibitor this month Tom Milledge has a life-long interest in art. As a child he was once confined to bed for 22 months and due to restrictions he was able to do very little else but draw. Quitting school at 15 Milledge began an apprenticeship in photo engraving. Photo engraving is a process whereby a picture is photographed and printed on metal with a light sensitive coating. The picture is then etched with acid. Following his work with photo engraving, he moved to catalogue and magazine work with companies such as Brigdens in Toronto. For the last 25 years for his working life he worked for The Toronto Star. Once retired, Milledge became interested in "TV artists". They stimulated an interest and desire to finally pursue his own art. Courses in portraits and landscape followed with Rutledge showing a flair for colour and design. His work is a combination of imagination and careful research. For example if Tom embarks on a painting of a wildlife subject such as a panther, he researchs the shapes and forms carefully. Once he has mastered the anatomy of the animal and decides on a design, his imagination allows him to place that animal in a setting that comes strictly from Milledge's inner view. As he says, "Everyone knows what a cow looks like, but just try to draw one." Milledge has also done a stint of teaching art to a group of art enthusiasts at Meneset Park. He shares a large ally Bayfield studio with his wife Barb who' is an accomplished fabric artist. He focuses on local .scenes and scenes from his travels and birds and animals. He and his wife came to Bayfield in 1990. Each summer Milledge has done demonstrations during the annual Goderich Art Club annual art show at the CPR Station. He is booked to be the guest artist at the Goderich Co-op Gallery in October. The Gallery is on the Square in Goderich and is open Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Challenge: Eating Well Solution: No special diet is required!
