HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2006-10-19, Page 31Challenge: Getting enough calcium and vitamin D to maintain strong bones and protect against osteoporosis Solution: Women 19-50 years of age should consume 1000 mg of calcium and 5 ug (200 IU) of Vitamin D per day. Milk and milk products, such as cheese and yogurt provide the most readily available source of calcium and other bone building nutrients. Other sources include calcium-fortified beverages (soy, rice and orange juice) tofu made with calcium sulfate, salmon and sardines with bones, sesame seeds and almonds. Bok choy, kale and broccoli also provide calcium but in smaller amounts. Vitamin D is found in fluid milk, eggs, fish and fish liver oils, margarine as well as in soy and rice beverages fortified with vitamin D. Sunlight on the skin can be a major source of vitamin D but is limited in Canada from October to March and by use of sunscreens. To prevent osteoporosis women are encouraged to get enough calcium, vitamin D and protein, limit caffeine, have sodium in moderation, and keep active particularly with weight-bearing activity. Obituaries JEAN RUTH CLEMENT Jean Ruth (Shiell) Clement of Blyth and formerly of Cambridge passed away at Clinton Public Hospital on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006. She was in her 58th year. She was the beloved wife of Shane Clement of Blyth. She was the dear daughter of Ruth Shiell of Blyth and the late Thomas Shiell (1972) and dear sister of Lloyd and Diane Shiell of Rostock, Lois and Paul Graham of Bobcaygeon, Connie Shiell of Blyth and Terri Oppenhauser of Mitchell. Her brother Jamie Shiell predeceased her in 2006. Friends were received at the Falconer Funeral Homes Ltd., Blyth Visitation Centre, 407 Queen St., Blyth on Wednesday from 7 - 9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Blyth Christian Reformed Church on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Elma Centre Cemetery at 3 p.m. Thursday. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy. JOHN CARMAN HAINES Mr. Carman Haines of Wingham passed away at Wingham and District Hospital on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006. He was 89. Mr. Haines was the beloved husband of Noreen (McAllister) Haines of Wingham. He was the dear brother-in-law of Mervin and Shirley McAllister of Wingham and uncle of Carl and Marilyn Haines of Kitchener, David Haines of St.' Thomas, Karen and Dale Wardley of Barrie and Gail and Paul Heffer of Wingham. He was predeceased by his wife Betty (Crich) in 1972 and his brother Neil Paterson Haines. Carman was a veteran of World War II. Following the war he farmed near Blyth until 1973. He was a Past Master of Blyth Masonic Lodge, a charter member and Past Worthy Patron of Regal Chapter #275 Order of Easter Star, Blyth and the Royal Canadian Legion, Blyth. His community service included 10 years on Morris Twp. School Board. Visitation was at McBurney Funeral Home, Wingham on Sunday from 7 - 9 p.m. The funeral service was held at the funeral home chapel on Monday at 2 p.m. Mrs. Marilyn Robertson officiated.
