Fall HOME IMPROVEMENT
Expert brings fresh eye to decorating your home
Home sweet home
Bev Elliott of Blyth has begun a home decorating business.
One of her first projects, even before completing the interior
design course was her own home, which is a blend of the
old and the new. (Bonnie Gropp photo)
described as "quite involved. It
covers every aspect of design."
Now, she is looking to do the same
thing for others, offering re-
designing, staging and interior
decorating.
While the latter is more ambitious,
essentially working with a home's
bare bows, "redesigning is about
going into someone's home -and
working with what they've got
without having them spend a -great
deal of money."
The exercise may require some
purging, said Elliott as "less is better
these days. The era of country clutter
is gone."
Staging on the other hand is
preparing the house for someone
else. "Having a professionally-
prepared home to put on the market
will mean selling faster for more,"
said Elliott.
"It's a small investment that's
outweighed by the benefits."
Stagers take advantage of current
trends and know the competition. As
well they offer an unbiased opinion
of what needs to be done to increase
a home's value, said Elliott. "Staged
homes show beautifully and sell
fast."
Elliott also found a company that .
offers a catalogue from which
people can choose items for their
home. "People are too busy to go out
and buy. I will go to their home and consultation to help them find the
with the catalogue do a one-on-one right items for their decor."

Citizen editor-
When it comes to home interiors,
sometimes it helps to get a different
perspective.
And Bev Elliott is qualified to
provide it. The Blyth woman has
recently graduated from the
Sheffield School of Interior Design's
Professional Design and Decorating
program, and is ready to offer
professional advice to anyone in
need.
Taking the course came about after
retirement. "I don't know if a person
should ever be finished working,"
said Elliott. "Retirement didn't
really excite me. I love people and I
missed the interaction. I • also think
you stay sharper."
An interest in home decorating
prompted her to consider her recent
career direction.
"I've always enjoyed interior
design and thought that I could take
a correspondence course and if
anyone needed that kind of help I'd
be available."
The move was timely too, as she
and her husband John had recently
moved. "The course helped me learn
more about my home as well."
While she had three years to
complete the course, Elliott was able
to finish in one. "I think if I'd been
younger it.actually would have taken
longer. When you're older you've
done more and seen more. I also -did
have to worry about fitting it in
between work hours."
A personal designer worked along-
with her in the program which she
