Get started on next year's gardens this fall
better in the ground than in the
pots."
After planting, Koch advises a
little mulching to prevent heaving.
Anytime you're preparing to plant,
Koch recommends being generous
with the space you're giving it.
"Make a hole twice the size of the
pot the plant was in. Why put a $10
pot in a $2 hole."
Before placing the plant in the
hole, tease out some roots from the
root ball to encourage growth, then
"pop it into the soil," said Koch. "It's
good to give the plant a home not
just plant it."
Though the majority of flowers
and shrubs are best planted in the
fall, Koch reminds that' the ones
which "strut their stuff in the cooler
weather", such as mums should be
put in the garden in the spring.
"They've expended their energy
showing off for you in the fall."
Season for planting
Nursery owner Shirley Koch said the best time for getting
summer flowers and shrubs into the soil is the autumn. The
roots have the opportunity to establish themselves before
the plant requires the energy for flowering. (Photo submitted)

The floral beauty of summer
seems a long way away. Yet the time
to get a start on what next season's
gardens will bring is now.
"Fall is for planting," says nursery
owner Shirley Koch.
While warmer months would seem
more conducive to digging and
planting, there are a number of
reasons why it's a good idea to get
your plants into the ground in the
fall. "One of the neatest reasons is
because we tend to get more regular
rains so you don't need to worry
about watering."
Another reason is that while the
plant is dormant above ground the
roots have the opportunity to
establish themselves so they have a
good start before the growing
season.
But when is it too late? "As long as
the ground isn't frozen you can
plant," said Koch. "I have hostas that
I planted two years ago when the
snow was falling. They will winter
