Family business
The Van Den Assems keep business all in the family.
Dylan's wife Mary-Ann is his partner in Dura-Weld and its
newest division Fortress Fencing. But their brood of seven
also contributes, helping out in the office and in the shop.

After 20 years in business Dylan'
Van Den Assem is pretty sure he
understands what the public is
looking for.
So when health issues presented a
need for some changes, the owner of
Dura-Weld decided to add a division
to his company that would ease him
away from the physical demands
while incorporating his love of
design and offer a uniquely
appealing product that gives people
a hand in that design.
"My chiropractor said it was time
to quit working and be the boss,"
said Van Den Assem.
"For 20 years we've been blessed
to provide for ourselves, but it was
coming to the stage when I couldn't
do it myself," he says of the, metal
fabrication.
In response, he, and his business
partner, wife, Mary-Ann have begun
Fortress Fencing, which creates
ornamental and chainlink fences.
The idea came about with the
removal of some railing from a
building in Brussels. "I tried to sell it
but it wasn't what the guy wanted.
He was looking for something
ornamental. That's how it all
started."
The work, said Van Den Assem, is
"a bit of an art." And while he can
create the heavy wrought-iron
fencing, he also offers an
economical alternative. "We buy the
posts, panels and brackets from a
supplier in Brantford. They are made
of galvalume. It doesn't rust, it's
powder-coated, very durable, but as
it's tubing, it's good way for people _
with a smaller budget to afford
ornamental fencing."
Customers can also have the
fences designed to any specification.
"I have a book that they can look
through to help them come up with
the design they like. The designs are
endless."
In addition the company also
offers arbours, trellises, picket
fencing, comer accents and address
signs.
Adapting to the needs of clients is
something Van Den Assem has come
to know through experience. "I've
learned to take customers' ideas and
help them realize what they'd
like."
Prices vary on the needs of the
