The Citizen, 2006-10-19, Page 11By BRENDA RADFORD Call 523-4296 THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2006. PAGE 11. Londesborough United Church will hold its anniversary service at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22. Rev. Paul Ross will return to the Londesborough pulpit as guest speaker. Fiddlers Marshall and Ethan Durnin will offer special music. If you missed these two young boys at the Ball's service you will want to attend this coming Sunday. Refreshments will follow the service. Rumour has it that Ed Salverda is mending well and will soon be back making the rounds of his old haunts. However you might want to keep Hank Reinink and his family in your prayers. Hank is struggling again with that demon, cancer. This past weekend, Oct. 14 and 15, 14 enthusiastic "traditional" rug hookers participated in a workshop at the Londesborough Community Hall. The weekend was full of shared knowledge and tips about the art and fellowship. Local rug hookers were joined by "hookers" from Port Dover, London, Barrie and Simcoe. Iris Simpson of Toronto taught a class in hooking fruit. Each participant worked on a canvas stamped with a variety of fruit. When completed the piece can be used as a chair seat cover. Iris is an Ontario Hooking Craft Guild accredited teacher as well as a McGown teacher in the United States. This was the third year she has come to Londesborough to share her talent with area hobbyists. Many of us recognize how fortunate we are to live in this great little community/village. However it's becoming apparent that good fortune comes to those who call Londesborough home. First we learned of the lottery winnings of Lorne and Geraldine Dale. Now it seems Brent and Janet Scrimgeour are off on an all-expenses-paid trip to Scotland. On Oct. 7 the couple, along with Gerry and Heidi (Scrimgeour) Bontaine joined a fun golf tournament sponsored by the Blyth Inn. Their good luck happened on the 15th hole. Brent's shot bounced on the green at least twice and rolled into the cup for a hole in one. That shot won Brent a seven-night golfing holiday for two in Scotland valued at $9,000. This all-inclusive trip prize was offered by P.A. Roy Insurance. of Clinton. Apparently neither the nasty weather nor the date, Friday the 13th, kept the euchre players from their passion as the Londesborough Happy Gang Seniors hosted 18 and 1/2 tables of players at their card party at the Londesborough Community Hall. Joanne MacDonald and Dorothy Carter finished in first place at the end of card playing with a score of 72 points. Close behind were two couples FROM LONDESBORO tied at 71 points to share the remaining winnings, Rita and Alma and Stu and Alex. Six couples, Delores Ho.watt and Dorothy Dalton, Don Bragg and Roy Krauter, Thelma and Bernice, John and Kathy, Gord and Yvonne Dougherty and Carmen and Ila Pollock shared the prize for most lone hands, all of them having successfully played five. The seniors will sponsor another card party on Nov. 10. Behind the scenes Blyth Festival artistic director, Eric Coates, led the Huron County Historical Society on a behind the scenes tour of Memorial Hall, the epicentre of the Blyth Festival. The group had dinner, were led through speeches and a dramatic history of the Blyth Festival by Coates himself, before the tour. "It's a dream to make boards energy self-sufficient," explained Ontario Public School Boards Association (OPSBA) regional vice- president Colleen Schenk, who's also the North Huron representative on the Avon Maitland District School Board. Schenk briefly described the initiative during an Avon Maitland meeting Tuesday, Oct. 10. Part of the OPSBA report provided to Avon Maitland trustees explained "the School Energy Coalition . . has met with the Ministry of Finance, realizing they will need strong political support, as well as intensive conservation to make any scheme work." According to Schenk, the established mandate of the School Energy Coalition is to seek out the best deal possible for member school boards, from existing energy suppliers. But as a recent sideline, the coalition began discussing the possibility of constructing a series of small-scale energy generating facilities, selling that energy into the provincial power grid, and essentially (according to the OPSBA report) "decreasing the cost of energy to school boards by 100 per cent." "Theoretically, at least, they could do it," Schenk said. She added the three methods being proposed so far are river-based hydroelectricity, solar power, and wind turbines.
