PAGE 23. Leisure Forrest shares his memories of the Islanders By Shawn Loughlin Citizen staff A little piece of Canadian history will be stopping in Blyth this October on its way across Ontario. Starting Oct. 12 in Stirling, through to Oct. 26 in Newmarket, with an Oct. 21 stop in Blyth, Memories of the Islanders and CBC's Jubilee is in its 1 1 th year on tour. This year, they have a special guest, Johnny Forrest, an original cast member of the CBC's Jubilee show. The theme of this year's tour is Sounds of Scotland, which is perfectly suited to Forrest, who provided the Scottish content on the program, wearing a kilt, singing Scottish songs and playing the accordion. Although the tour has been in existence for II years now, this is the first time that Forrest has been onboard, and he couldn't be happier to be a part of the tour. Forrest calls it the resurrection of Johnny (he refers to himself in the third person) something that he said has been long overdue. "I'm a showbiz person. Just open the doors, and Johnny's ready to go," Forrest said in a phone interview. "It's the right tour for me, it's the right group of people. It fits in with the Don Messer music and Johnny was a part of it for 10 years. So I couldn't get a better fit than this one." Forrest calls Messer an icon (as well as Wee Donald, which Forrest said was because he was indeed "wee" as well as the youngest of 11 children). The two were great friends. Forrest even served as a pallbearer at Messer's funeral, a job he said he was honoured to perform. "This show has given me a new reason for living," Forrest said. "When I walk on stage, I'll be •thinking of Wee Donald, because without him, I wouldn't have been on that stage." This tour is a tribute to the music that Messer cultivated over 10 years on his program. Forrest does not underestimate the impact Jubilee had on Canada, saying that he is proud to have been a part of something so special and to know that it is still living. "[It's] that music you never hear anymore unless someone puts it on. You don't see those shows on television anymore," Forrest said. "It was a great show in its time, and the music, I think will live forever." Forrest lives in B.C. now, where he owns his own traveUtour company that specializes in trips to Scotland and Ireland, as well as driving a school bus before this tour came up. Forrest has almost completed :5 4 • -.V teat. gflitapertfatr m#-fait lV October 15, 2006 Dad and Mom (John and Mary Perrie) Andrew and Maryanne i t:. The book will start from Forrest's childhood in Scotland and will feature candid moments with Messer as well as his time on the show. ."It's quite the story; it'll be a Canadian story," Forrest said. "Those who still remember Don Messer and who appreciate what he did for Canadian music will appreciate it. You'll never hear any of it anywhere else, unless I put it in here."
