To freedom
Lincoln Dinning, father of
fallen Canadian soldier Matt
Dinning, was on hand this past
week to talk to the Grade 7/8
students at Blyth Public
School. Dinning commended
the students, who are wearing
red every 'Freedom' Friday to
support Canadian troops. He
spoke of his son, the war on
terror and the importance of
freedom. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
The Thanksgiving weather held
true and gave us one more perfect
weekend to be 'thankful' for. Along
with everything else we as
Canadians have to give thanks for,
good weather isn't usually one of
them.
Along with having my family
home and safe this holiday, I
personally am grateful that we have
young men and women who are
willing to keep us safe by putting
themselves in harm's way.
Regardless.of politics, I am in awe of
those men and women and their
families.
So while I sat down to a full table
with all my family, I was most
At the Oct. 3 meeting of Huron
East council there was a motion to
cut the annual ratepayers meetings
from five down to three.
This motion was denied, facing
strong opposition from Grey
councillor, Alvin McLellan, who
said there has always been excellent
turnouts at Grey's meetings.
***
New business- brought up by
Seaforth councillor, Joe Steffler,
prompted council to draft a motion
for immediate repaving/recon-
struction of Hwy. 8, through the
Huron East area.
The motion was carried and will
certainly aware that there are many
Canadian families who have a chair
empty this year. In fact 40 at last
count, will be permanently empty. -
Our thoughts and prayers are with
those families; not 'just on
Thanksgiving, but every day.
We started our weekend festivities
on Friday with a big birthday dinner
for our daughter Leah. She is
turning prettier every day and at her
age that makes her down right
dangerous. Happy birthday sweets.
Our granddaughter, Miss Myrah
was here for Friday and Saturday
testing out her new castle and she
had a ton of fun.
I would like all those writers out
there to plan on attending the four-
county connections writers' potluck
on Oct. 22 in Goderich.
The semi-annual potluck has been
held in various locations throughout
Huron, Bruce and Grey for eight
years and this year we are hoping to
pick up some writers from further
afield as well.
It is a fun day with purpose offered
to any and all writers in the area.
There will be "wanta be's" - "useta
be brought to the municipalities .
for support, in addition to the
premier and the minister of
transportation.
In regards to the condition of Hwy.
8 through Huron East, Steffler posed
the question to council "why are we
being treated like second-class
citizens?" 4.
***
With council expecting some
changes in the coming months after
the election, they have entered a
"lame duck" period where not many
changes will take effect until
December, when the new council is
sworn in.
Monday had the Women's
Institute members of Huron County
being hosted by Huron South for
their fall rally. The gathering took
place in Dashwood and several from
Huron West participated.
The potluck was terrific as usual
and the speaker was from Curves -
encouraging everyone to give
themselves the gift of time and
exercise.
Thursday last week was the
London Area Convention and seven
Districts came together to celebrate
their WI year as well as plan for the
year ahead. A new executive was
ratified and past president Glenna
Ladell passed the historic gavel on to
new area president Anne Innes.
There were 11 members from
Huron West, (which included several
from Auburn) attending the day in
Thorndale.
The Kids on the Block performed
their puppet show which is steeped
in lessons, and messages for kids.
Adults certainly could benefit from
these messages as well. • -
After the banquet dinner the
approximately 200 women were
treated to the Scottish dancers and
several brave WI souls were given a
chance to dance with them.
Except for making a few wrong
turns on the dance floor but just one
coming home, all went pretty much
as planned. A great day was had by
all.
