As I write it is the Feast of Sukkoth for Jews around the world. We have passed through Rosh HaShanah (literally the head of the year), New Year. Then came Yom Kippur, which is the Day of Atonement. You must make peace with all you may have offended and then you must confess and make peace with God. On Erev Yom Kippur there is an evening service. The next day is Yom Kippur itself and the whole day is focused on synagogue. The serv- ice started at 9 a.m. and ended at I p.m. Then there were teachings for those who wished to stay and the service started again at 3:30 p.m. and lasted until about 6:30. From dusk on the Erev before until dusk Continued from page 15 refused to read one letter. Then one letter arrived without a postmark. It was hand delivered. One of the dancers told her, a big man delivered it and asked to give it to her. He said she would understand the message. It read, "I know where you are. I know what you do. ThiS doesn't change the way I feel. What I've said in each letter is still true." She did not know what the other letters said, The Canadian Cancer Society is holding its Let's Get Together Breast Cancer Awareness Month event in Clinton, Oct. 23. "Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity for us to get women together and to encourage them, and the men in their lives, to be aware, be proactive, and get the facts about breast heath," says Janis Cunningham, manager of the Canadian Cancer Society Huron- Perth Unit. The featured speakers of this edu- on Yom Kippur the faithful did a complete fast. This translates to nothing passing your lips...NOTH- ING! Some people observe Yom Kippur by going to the Western Wall and praying together. It was a sea of devout humanity and a beautiful sight. If you aren't a Jew you can't go on the plaza but must stay behind a barrier. It is not for tourists and there is also concern for the safety of the people in this land. It is also the Muslim Ramadan. There are lights strung up around the old city. The moon schedules life for the Muslims. They do not eat in day- light during Ramadan so conces- sions must be made. On our trip to Galilee we made sure we would be back before dark so as not to prevent our bus driver, Walid, from joining his family to eat. It's an important time to be but then she opened them all. Each letter expressed his love to her and each letter asked the same ques- tion. Within an hour she was on the bus going home. She barely made it in time for Christmas EVe. She held out a card to see if the invitation still stood. The answer was yes. The card read, "Will you come home and dance with your Poppa again?" Friends, God's love for us is like cational event are cancer researcher, Ben Hedley and breast cancer sur- vivor, Donna McTavish. McTavish is president of the Canadian Cancer Society's Huron- Perth Unit, co-facilitator of the Society's Circle of Friends breast cancer support group and a peer sup- port volunteer. Hedley is a PhD student in the Department of Medical Biophysics, University of Western Ontario and the Cancer Research Laboratory Program, London Regional Cancer Program. He will present, Breast Cancer Research: Process, Knowledge, and Translation. The focus of his research is to analyze genes that contribute, or inhibit, the spread of breast cancer throughout the human body. Hedley has passion for his work: "It's very personal for me. I've had a family member die from breast can- cer. I find it challenging and reward- ing, and I may pursue a career path as an oncologist," he explained. We're excited about the event," said Cunningham. "We're honoured to be able to bring Ben to Clinton and Donna, well she's a woman extraordinaire! When she shares her story of breast cancer, and how it changed her life, it's really heart- warming and uplifting." The Canadian Cancer Society Let's Get Together Breast Cancer Awareness Month event occurs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Betty Cardno Centre (on Hwy. 8) in Clinton. The event includes dessert and tea and coffee. • Tickets are $5 and are available until Oct. 16. Tickets will not be available at the door. together with your family. Then there is a week building up to Sukkoth. People prepare food, build their succas and prepare their minds. This festival comes from God's instruction that they should "live in booths, seven days; all the citizens in Israel shall live in booths, in order that future generations may know that I made the Israelite people live in booths when I brought them out from Egypt..." (Lev. 23:39-40, 42-43). In other words it is to remind us that things were always or may not always be this good. I don't know how many people actually live in their succas ....probably the most faithful do. Last night across the street I heard singing and looked out my window. The succa was lit up and people were singing happily. They decorate them and make them comfortable to eat in and 'live' in. this father's. He longs for us to be in a relationship with him. II Corinthians 5:21 says, "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." We might be on the wrong bus going the direction of power, pres- tige or party. Any other god will make us come up empty and want- ing. The God of the Bible cares for us like a father and has great love for us.
